The New York Yankees have been showing a lot of faith in their top prospects like Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones over the last two years. However, they have not been able to give them a lot of chances in the big league. In the previous year, though, ‘The Martian’ made his debut in the big league on September 1. And he made a lot of noise after he hit a homer off the future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander. He was having a good splash for almost eight games until he suffered a UCL tear in September. Then, he underwent Tommy John surgery. Later, he returned to baseball in May for rehab assignments.

But it seems like injuries don’t stay away from him for too long. On the other hand, Spencer Jones has been a great prospect for the Bronx Bombers. He resembles Aaron Judge quite a bit in terms of his physique and playing style. But in the major league, the Yankees currently don’t have any space for the top prospects in their outfield. Hence, they may not be “Entirely off the table” for trade at the deadline.

Currently, MLB is getting nearer to the July 30 trade deadline. As per recent reports, the Yankees might be open to dealing away a few of their top prospects. Jeff Passan of ESPN reported that Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones are not “Entirely off the table” for the NY side. Brian Cashman might be using them in trade discussions heading up to the deadline. However, Passan added that it is highly unlikely that the Bronx Bombers would actually trade either Dominguez or Jones. But when the team has been through a 10-20 skid, they can’t rule out any possibility. The Yankees had a great 50-22 start to the current season. But then they started fading away since June 13.

Clearly, they have a numerous holes to fill if they want to make the World Series for the first time since 2009. Passan said, “Trading top prospects like Dominguez and Jones has a slim chance of happening, but Cashman knows when there’s a freefall, limiting to anything can be counterproductive.” Now, the ball is in the Yankees GM’s court. Moreover, the ESPN writer added that the Bombers are looking for “A Late-inning relief help,” along with a “Versatile infielder,” and a “Productive bat.” Also, they would like to grab a potential high-end starting pitcher, feels Passan.

Trading Away Top Two Prospects Might Be A Bit Drastic

Currently, Jasson Dominguez is recovering from an oblique strain. However, he showed the potential to be a star last year. He played eight major league games and hit four home runs. Later, in 2024, during his rehab assignments, Dominguez played 23 minor league games, and 20 of them were part of rehab. He was hitting .356 with a 1.014 OPS along with three stolen bases and six home runs. On the other hand, Spencer Jones have not yet made his major league debut but ranked no. 2 top prospect behind Dominguez for the Yankees.

This year, in Double-A, he played 76 games, and posted 10 homers along with 47 RBIs. Despite it is quite clear that the NY side needs improvements if they want to go deep into the playoffs this season, trading top prospects like Dominguez and Jones might be a little bit too risky.
