The New York Yankees won a thrilling Game 1 of the American League Division Series (ALDS) against Kansas City Royals on Saturday. After Gleyber Torres’ leadoff home run, Jazz Chisholm Jr stole a controversial base, and Alex Verdugo drove crucial RBIs to secure a 6-5 victory.

Having said that, both teams enjoyed a rest day on Sunday, as the series will resume on Monday for Game 2. The New York Yankees had an extended workout session. However, besides the playoff roster players, injured starting pitcher Nestor Cortes was also captured with some action, making it a crucial step in his return from elbow injury.

New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes is taking steps towards a potential return from the injured list, where he has been sidelined with a flexor strain in his pitching elbow since September 25. On Sunday, he participated in a throwing session, marking his first time throwing since his injury. According to Yankee manager Aaron Boone, Cortes was expected to make approximately 20 to 30 throws during the team’s workout ahead of Game 2 of the AL Division Series against the Kansas City Royals. Meanwhile, the workout supposedly went great as Cortes expressed optimism about his recovery. “The goal is to be back as soon as possible,” he told the reporters.

Notably, Nestor Cortes had previously indicated that he might be ready for the American League Championship Series (ALCS) if the Yankees progress that far, although it seems unlikely he would return by October 14. However, if the Bronx Bombers make it to the World Series, he could potentially pitch. During the regular season, Cortes was a key contributor for the Yanks, leading the team with a 3.77 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP across 174.1 innings. He also posted a 22.8% strikeout rate and a 5.5% walk rate. Should he return, it is anticipated that he would serve as a reliever due to the time required to build up his strength and endurance. Regardless, Nestor Cortes’ potential return would be a significant boost for the Bombers as they aim for a World Series championship, with his performance crucial to their postseason aspirations.

Carlos Rodon’s journey with the New York Yankees culminated in a dramatic season marked by challenges and resilience. His lowest moment came in his final start of the 2023 season against the Royals, where he infamously allowed eight runs without recording an out. However, 2024 has seen a remarkable turnaround as he played a crucial role in helping the Yanks secure the AL-East title.

In the postseason, Carlos Rodon is set to make his third career playoff start, hoping to build on his previous experiences. Rodon is coming off a career-high 16 wins, allowing two earned runs or fewer in 21 of his 32 starts, including a strong finish with a 2.20 ERA over his last five appearances. Hence, the New York Yankees’ hopes will be sky-high for him as he takes the mound for Game 2.
