Anthony Volpe, the New York Yankees’ newest rookie, is struggling on the plate and might need an intervention really soon.

New York Yankees highly ranked prospect Anthony Volpe made waves with his performance in spring training. He earned a prominent place in the starting lineup as a shortstop, defeating the most favored candidate for the role, Oswald Peraza. While he was poised for a dream debut in the pinstripes, the transition into the major league hasn’t been the best.

Anthony Volpe has struggled on the plate so far in the season. He has almost played all games but failed to leave a mark with the bat. His defense isn’t a matter of concern for now, and also, his runs between the base path are a treat to watch. However, the lack of hitting power will likely cause him problems in the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, the Yankees can do their part to help the rookie thrive better.

In 13 appearances so far, Anthony Volpe has hit .158 with three runs, five stolen bases, and 14 strikeouts. Coming out 9th in the order, the shortstop has too little time to settle in. Moreover, as a rookie playing his first major league season, that too with a team like New York Yankees, Volpe is feeling the jitters and taking his time to fit in. Here’s where the Yankees can step in. If anyone has observed, Anthony Volpe has a tendency to thrive under pressure.

Let’s say, for example, the infamous shortstop battle of spring training. Anthony Volpe was put in a pressure cooker to perform in order to seal his place in the starting lineup for the Yankees. Look at the results he achieved. Now what’s happening in the majors is that he’s coming in at the 9th when most of the work is done by the regulars at the top. Thus, he has a mindset to just close the innings for the team without any added pressure. That being said, the Yankees need to intervene and give Volpe the leadoff spot. That would put him under pressure and could generate the best of him. Moreover, with DJ LeMahieu and Gleyber Torres dealing with tightness issues, promoting Volpe could be a wise choice for the Bombers’ think tank.

Anthony Volpe came in with a lot of promising talent. However, he hasn’t been able to translate that in the true sense. Despite the Yankees hitting coach, Dillon Lawson is least bothered. He said the front office had set realistic expectations from the shortstop. This season all they went is for Anthony to have a good defensive play and hit as many professional at-bats as he could.

Lawson further added that the team is happy with Volpe’s performance so far. They understand that it’s just the start for the rookie, and the better is yet to come. The team remains positive and expects Anthony Volpe to have much success in the latter half of the season.
