The New York Yankees have been through a slump lately. They have lost their place at the top of the American League East division. Currently, the Baltimore Orioles have overtaken the NY side from the top of the AL East. However, before they entered June, the 27-time World Champions were on a roll. They were 49-19. Eventually, they became the first team to win 50 games in the ongoing regular season. But then it all fell apart. In June, the most successful team in the league’s history had a 14-13 record.

Moreover, in July, it has been even worse so far as they have been 4-8. However, before the All-Star break, the Yankees managed to win a series against their division rivals, the Orioles. But they need this break to plan to find ways to get back to winning ways. They need to get back to the momentum they started with this 2024 regular season. Lately, the NY side has made some changes in the roster.

Right Before The All-Star Break, Yankees Make Some Roster Move

Aaron Boone’s side is not very happy with Scott Effross in the big league bullpen. The sidewinding reliever had two outings during Triple-A rehab, which was pretty good. But prior to that, he struggled a lot. Hence, it was not convincing for the Bronx Bombers that he was ready for the big league. Effross had Tommy John surgery back in October 2022. Then, he stayed on the Injured List for almost the whole next two seasons. Also, last winter, he had a back procedure. Now, the reliever is on his final days of the 30-day rehab assignment. But the Yankees decided to option him to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. On Sunday, he had pitched a scoreless inning for them. Aaron Boone’s side believes Effross will be up with them at some point in 2024.

However, it won’t happen after the All-Star break. They return on Friday. On Sunday, the Bronx Bombers lost a close game, 6-5, against the Orioles after back-to-back fielding blunders. Then, they made a couple of roster moves. Following the loss, the Yankees optioned the infielder rookie Jorbit Vivas to Triple-A. He had a three-day first call-up. However, it did not lead up to his MLB debut. Other than Vivas, the NY side designated the righty Cody Morris for assignment. Doing this, the team created a 40-man roster spot for Effross.

What Can The Bombers Do With Morris?

Cody Morris is 27 years old. In the ongoing season, the righty had control problems. But he went 6-0 in 24 Triple-A outings with a 4.25 ERA. He had two starts in those 24 games. In 36 innings, Morris had 42 strikeouts and worked 26. Previously, this season, the Bombers called up Morris on two occasions. Firstly, it was for seven days in April. Secondly, they called him for a day near the end of May.

But Morris did not appear for a game. On December 26, the Cleveland Guardians traded him to the Yankees for the outfielder Estevan Florial. Anyway, starting this Monday, the Yankees have Morris in a seven-day window. In these days, they can trade him, waive him, some other team can claim him. He can opt for free agency as well. Or the Yankees can keep him as a non-roster player.
