The New York Yankees have one really good starting pitcher on their roster. That’s Gerrit Cole, who won the 2023 AL Cy Young Award. Otherwise, last season was not that great for the NY side. The Bronx Bombers could not make the postseason for the first time since 2016. They finished with a disastrous 82-80 record. It was a tremendous shame for the organization that was looking to win the World Series. But the Bombers have not even made it to the “Big Dance” since 2009. The fans are eagerly waiting for something amazing to happen in 2024. After a terrible 2023 season, some fans are a bit pessimistic as well.

Moreover, unlike the offense, the starting pitcher’s group looks a bit shaky. Besides Gerrit Cole, they do not have another ace pitcher or a very dependable starter. In the offseason, the NY side had links with Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery in trade rumors. But nothing really materialized since then. Hence, the fans can only hope to see Cole stay healthy throughout the year. But the Spring Training did not start that well for Cole. The 2023 AL Cy Young winner hurt himself and needed an MRI. As a result, the Pinstripes are looking to add another dependable pitcher like Dylan Cease.

The NY side is waiting for the MRI results of Gerrit Cole. Since their superstar pitcher is not healthy, they have started looking for backup. Apparently, Dylan Cease is back on the Bronx Bomber’s radar. Recently, Bob Nightengale of USA Today has made a new offer to the RHP of the Chicago White Sox. However, Nightengale noted that the Yankees are still not looking to trade their top outfield prospect, Spencer Jones. In the offseason, the White Sox tried a lot to trade Cease to any of the interested teams. But no agreement ever came together.

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman mentioned the White Sox failed to trade Cease because one GM said they demanded “The Sun and the Moon” for the right-handed pitcher. Cease is only 28 years old. On Sunday, Nightengale mentioned that the Yankees and the White Sox had extensive talks regarding Dylan Cease. But the NY side did not offer anything that would tempt the White Sox to say, “Yes.” Cease might be a better option for the Yankees than Snell or Montgomery at present. He had more strikeouts and was more durable over the last three years, with 97 starts.

Aaron Boone Explains Why Cole Needed An MRI

On Monday, the Yankees manager mentioned that Gerrit Cole experienced difficulties to bounce back between starts. Aaron Boone told the reporters that Cole described it as his recovery before he made his next start. It is more important to Cole that he feels good throughout the season while making 100 pitches.

Moreover, Boone mentioned that Cole does not have recovery issues when he is throwing between 45 and 55. But that’s not what is happening right now. Hence, it has been more of a challenge and even more taxing. That’s why the team decided to send Cole for an MRI on his right elbow to see what they are dealing with at the moment.
