Injuries weren’t an issue for the New York Yankees this year except for Gerrit Cole’s elbow inflammation, which fortunately didn’t cost the team much. However, as the 2024 MLB season is reaching its halfway stage, the club has begun to show signs of a crack.

Last week, Anthony Rizzo ended up injuring his arm after a collision with a Red Sox reliever. Additionally, top prospect Jasson Dominguez, who just recovered from Tommy John injury, is once again down with another major setback. Ahead of the Orioles game on Wednesday, the Yankees announced roster decisions on both Rizzo and Dominguez.

The 2024 MLB season hasn’t been kind to Anthony Rizzo this year. Entering Wednesday, he was hitting .223 with 8 home runs and 28 RBIs. To add to the misery, the first baseman, who is also an impending free agent, injured his left forearm. The unfortunate incident happened on Sunday when Rizzo collided with a Boston Red Sox reliever while trying to get a single on a line drive. He was immediately taken off the field and sent for scans. The infielder was confident of getting away with it until the X-ray scans ruled out a forearm fracture. Rizzo was devastated and shocked upon learning about the diagnosis. “I’ve been hurt and felt pain before, but a broken bone is devastating. This one felt different,” Rizzo said on Tuesday.

While the New York Yankees initially placed him on 10-day IL, Anthony Rizzo was shifted to 60-day IL to make space for Gerrit Cole, who marked his season debut on Wednesday after missing two months with an elbow nerve inflammation injury. Rizzo has revealed that the arm fracture will keep him out for at least 4 weeks with no physical activity. He will then slowly build and is expected to be ready in 8 weeks, i.e. mid-August. Regardless, the first baseman is confident of returning this year, that too without any surgical routines. That being said, the Bronx Bombers called up prospect Ben Rice as a replacement for Rizzo. Rice is primarily a catcher but can play first base, too. He made his major league debut on Tuesday and registered a base hit in 4-2 over the Baltimore Orioles.

Jasson Dominguez Picks Up Oblique Strain

New York Yankees highly rated prospect Jasson Dominguez has picked up yet another serious injury in less than a week of being reinstated from IL after Tommy John surgery. Dominguez was removed from the Triple-A game on Saturday and went through scans, which ruled a moderate-level oblique strain injury. He has been moved to Triple-A IL without any definite timeline.

Notably, Jasson Dominguez spent 8 months under rehab after enduring Tommy John surgery in September 2023. After a 20-days long rehab assignment, the Martian was optioned to Triple-A. However, injuries refuses to leave the prospect’s back as Yankees stare at yet another prolonged absence. It will directly deplete Yanks outfield depth which could be a problem in the latter half of the season.
