New York Yankees ace, Gerrit Cole, widely regarded as the best pitcher in MLB, has ironically never won an American League CY Young Award. He has been in the business for 11 years and made a record six All-Star appearances. But that Cy Young trophy never made it to his trophy cabinet. Nevertheless, the wait could and should end this season.

While the New York Yankees remain in the middle of an unacceptable season, ace pitcher Gerrit Cole seems unaffected by the negative energy. With each start, the pitcher is scaling new career heights and is strengthening his CY Young campaign at the same time. Recently, Cole pitched a scoreless start against the Brewers, which put him in an elite franchise club.

After losing the series to the Brewers, the New York Yankees stepped into the play for their pride in the series finale on Sunday. Interestingly, the hosts secured a thrilling win despite being with no hits in nine straight innings. Kyle Higashioka‘s walk-off hit helped the Yanks earn the tie-breaking run in the 13th inning. However, the hero of the game was undoubtedly ace Gerrit Cole. In his 30th start of the season, Cole lasted seven innings without leaking a single run in three hits. Not only that, the ace struck out nine hitters side by side to unlock a new milestone. After the start, Cole’s ERA came down to 2.79, which remains the best in the American League.

Moreover, as per Katie Sharp of Stahead, Gerrit Cole has recorded 23 starts this season with two or fewer runs allowed, which is the most in MLB this year. Not only that, Cole is the third ace in Yankees history to unlock the achievement. The only pitchers with more stars than him are Ron Guidry (26) and Jack Chesbro (28). Undoubtedly, this stat will further strengthen the pitcher’s campaign to secure the AL Cy Young Award. Cole remains in the midst of his career-best season with a 13-4 win record and lowest AL-ERA. In 30 starts this season, the pitcher struck out 204 batters in 187.0 innings with a 1.03 WHIP. Having said that, the decision lies with the MLB authorities to determine if these accolades are enough to provide Gerrit Cole his maiden CY Young Award.

New York Yankees ace pitcher Gerrit Cole is super competitive and fierce when it comes to pitching a perfect start. To fulfill the pursuit, he requires his catchers to remain on their toes throughout the game. However, it seems catcher Ben Rortvedt didn’t receive the memo, as he has landed on the wrong side of Cole. Ben was inducted into the roster after Jose Trevino’s season-ending wrist injury.

While the catcher has done a fair job, Gerrit Cole is seemingly unimpressed. He has been seen having animated conversations with Rortvedt in the past. But during the series finale vs. Brewers on Sunday, things escalated to an extent. Ben almost knocked out the pitcher with a dangerous throw to second base. Further, he messed up while keeping pitches, which angered Cole as he left the mound, shaking his head in disappointment.
