Juan Soto, 25, is hitting free agency next season despite enjoying a dream run with the New York Yankees. Entering the team this off-season in a blockbuster trade, Soto had no intentions to consider an extension as he stood a chance to fetch a lot more money in the free agency market.

That still holds true to some extent. However, with New York Yankees standing on the cusp of clinching a World Series title, dynamics could change drastically. Meanwhile, the Yankee fans are playing their part to lure Juan Soto with a unique gesture that event caught Soto’s eye during AL Championship Series.

New York Yankees fans have clearly embraced Juan Soto, with many going so far as to bring mock checks to Game 2 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) in hopes of convincing the soon-to-be free agent to stay with the team. One check hilariously displayed the amount of “$700,000,000,” referencing the massive contract Shohei Ohtani signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to Talkin’ Yanks and Michael Castaldo. The playful display shows just how much the Bronx faithful want Soto to remain in pinstripes. While Soto is one of the best hitters in baseball, some wonder whether the Yanks would offer him a contract of that size, especially considering Ohtani’s unique value as both a pitcher and hitter.

However, there’s no denying that Juan Soto will be one of the most sought-after free agents this offseason. At just 25 years old, he’s already established himself as a generational talent. In his first season with the New York Yankees, Soto excelled, slashing .288/.419/.569 with 41 home runs, 31 doubles, and 109 RBIs across 157 games. Hence, the Yanks would certainly love to re-sign Soto, but they will face competition from other teams willing to offer substantial contracts for his services. Soto’s ability to consistently play at an elite level, particularly in a high-pressure market like New York, makes him a franchise-altering player, one who could command a historic deal. Moreover, the dynamic duo of Soto and Aaron Judge have become one of the most dangerous partners in the league. Hence, the franchise is keen to keep that partnership intact and ensure long-term success.

The New York Yankees have three players who were named finalists for the 2024 AL Gold Glove Award: Anthony Volpe, Alex Verdugo, and Juan Soto. Volpe, who won the award as a rookie last season, has continued to showcase stellar defensive skills, making him a favorite for another win. Verdugo has also been consistently performing well in left field.

The most surprising finalist, however, is Juan Soto. Known primarily for his offensive prowess, Soto’s nomination comes despite advanced defensive metrics not being particularly favorable toward him. Still, Soto led right fielders in the majors with nine assists, highlighting his ability to make big plays. Hence, he might just end up winning the title if the stars align.
