New York Yankees’ outfield depth has ceased to exist since the injury crisis jolted the team. First, Harrison Bader, then Giancarlo Stanton, and then the mighty Aaron Judge; the team lost all the formidable hitters one after another due to unfortunate injuries. While Judge and Bader returned within the set timeline, Stanton is likely to miss the remainder of May.

With their outfield depth being a concern this season, the Yankees saw an opportunity to bolster their roster by reacquiring a player they were familiar with and who had previously shown promise while wearing the pinstripes. However, that required them to have negotiations with their arch-rivals, Boston Red Sox. But as GM Brian Cashman said earlier, the team is willing to sort to any means to ease the ongoing injury crisis. Hence, the Bombers went all in and acquired a promising outfielder.

In a surprising move that shocked baseball fans, the New York Yankees announced the reacquisition of outfielder Greg Allen in a stunning deal with their arch-rivals, the Boston Red Sox. The rival teams have only engaged in trade talks five times prior to this. Naturally, the deal came as a surprise to many. However, the Yankees are clearly desperate to end their outfield woes. On the other hand, Boston Red Sox had an assignment clause with Greg. As per the clause, they had to add him to the final roster before Friday, which they weren’t willing to do. As a result, the Red Sox happily shipped him to New York.

The Yankees sent off minor league pitcher Diego Hernandez and cash considerations in exchange for Greg Allen. On top of that, Bombers manager Aaron Boone announced that Allen would make his way to the big league roster. Also, the team vacated a seat for Allen as they optioned shortstop Oswald Peraza to the Triple-A. Peraza was placed on IL due to an ankle injury a couple of weeks ago. As soon as he recovered, the team reinstated him and sent him back to Triple-A to make space for Greg Allen. The idea behind signing Greg was his switch-hitting abilities. Boone said Allen is versatile and did a good job the last time he arrived in the Bronx. Hence, the team thought of him as a perfect candidate to strengthen his depth.

Meanwhile, the Yankees fan base has delivered its verdict on the team’s latest trade acquisition. Greg Allen, the Bombers’ newest acquisition, earlier had a brief stint with the team in 2021. He played 15 games with an average of .270 before moving to the Pirates in the next season. In his short stint at the Bronx, the outfielder emerged as a promising talent, and fans loved to see him. As a result, now that Allen has returned home, the Yankee fans could not get any happier.

Greg Allen hasn’t received too many opportunities in the past few seasons. His numbers do not implicate the talent he possesses. If given the right stage and opportunity, the outfielder can shine. Hence, the Yankees will hope Greg brings his best to the table and help the team in ensuring a successful campaign.
