“We Stopped Inventing,” Sergio Perez Jokingly Points Out How Red Bull’s Approach In Reference To Carlos Sainz’s Competition

Sergio Perez had gone through a lot of ups and downs last season. He started the 2023 season brilliantly, winning two of the first four races. In that situation, it looked as if the fans can see a repeat of the 2016 season where the reigning champions go through an internal battle between the two drivers for the title. However, unlike Nico Rosberg, Checo could not pull off a miracle beating the reigning champion. After the first four Grands Prix in 2023, Red Bull won four, with Max Verstappen winning a couple, and so did Sergio Perez.

But things went topsy-turvy for the Mexican driver as he started deteriorating through mid-season. He had several issues during the qualifying sessions and had a number of DNFs. Since then, Checo had to deal with rumors and speculations regarding his replacement. However, in the end of the 2023 season, the Mexican driver managed to help Red Bull with their first ever one-two finish of a season. But the gap between Max and Checo was really concerning. Nevertheless, Sergio Perez has been showing more consistency in 2024. Albeit, he has not won a race yet.

Recently, Checo opened up on his improvements in the ongoing season, while talking to the media, including Formula1.com. He said that the improvements he and his team made over the winter makes him feel really very happy. Also, Checo said last year was tough as he was losing self-confidence at one point. Later, he also hired a mental coach. But coming to 2024, Sergio Perez feels those improvements prompted his confidence to return gradually. Currently, in the standings after the first four races, Sergio is in second place, only 13 points behind his triple-time champion teammate. Max Verstappen has already won three races in 2024.

And the one race the Austrian outfit did not win so far was in Melbourne, Australia. It was again Carlos Sainz Jr. of Ferrari like 2023, who has been the only non-Red Bull driver to win a race. But there is still a plenty of time to go this year, a lot of GPs still left. Lately, Sergio Perez said in reference to Carlos Sainz that he would say, “We stopped inventing.” It was in reference to the Spaniard’s viral radio message back in 2022 British GP. At present, Sergio Perez says that he and his team have a much better base and they are happily making progress throughout the weekends.

Last year, Sergio Perez mentioned that they were in a position during mid-season when nothing seemed to work in their favor. Checo said during those moments drivers tend to go around circles and circles. Later, in the fag end of the 2023 season, the Mexican driver said he and his team found the situation to be better. As per Checo, it is better to step back and not chase it with the set-up too much because then they can compromise a lot of things.

That’s exactly what they tried to follow in 2024. Hence, Sergio is more comfortable, happier, and glad that his confidence started to come back gradually. Moreover, Checo feels that RB20 is a better car than its predecessors. Hence, he believes there is more to come from Red Bull in the following races.
