Gleyber Torres, the New York Yankees second baseman, had a tough start to the 2024 MLB season after he finished as the team’s best hitter besides Aaron Judge in 2023. Torres, the impending free agent, signed a $11 million arbitration contract and is actively seeking an extension.

However, his present trajectory is only spoiling his case as his batting average has dropped to an abysmal rate. That being said, Gleyber Torres earned his moment of redemption in the recent away series against Tampa Bay Rays. Following the clutch hit, the infielder revealed that he was eagerly waited or his moment to come.

In the recently concluded series against the Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres exploded on the plate with his first clutch hit of the season. Torres slammed a three-run home run to extend the Yankees’ lead to 10-6 in the series finale. That being said, the clutch hit meant more to Torres, who has been struggling hard this year. His average as of his writing is .208, with 2 home runs. However, despite the pressure, the infielder said he waited for his moment patiently and was happy to be finally able to cross the finish line. The most important thing was to contribute to the team that has stuck with him through constant thick and thin.

Gleyber Torres further boasted about the support and backing he has received throughout the tough journey. He called the Yankees his home and his teammates as a family, as they never shied away from having his back. “It’s more than teammates, it’s family. The relationships I have here are amazing,” Torres quoted. That being said, the veteran second baseman acknowledged that his job wasn’t done and that the clutch hit was just a stepping stone. Torres added that he would celebrate the series win against the Rays for the night. However, he will shift his focus to the upcoming series with the Minnesota Twins as he has to find new ways to contribute. “Just try to figure out a way to do something for the team again,” said Torres. Overall, Torres’s resurgence is a massive positive for the Yanks, as they might no longer feel the void in the hitting lineup.

Torres’ Roster Spot With Yankees In Danger Amid Brutal Slump

Gleyber Torres has been trying as hard as ever to break out of his offensive slump. However, his never-ending woes could soon work against him. DJ LeMahieu, the veteran third baseman, is on the cusp of a return from IL sometime later in the month. He will be rightfully reinstated at third base upon return.

However, with Jon Berti and Oswaldo Cabrera hot on the plate, Aaron Boone might replace them with Gleyber Torres in second base. Notably, Boone has already benched Torres twice in the season thus far. And LeMahieu’s return will only make things more and more difficult and challenging for Torres as he competes with his own teammates for a roster spot.
