The New York Yankees bullpen has been a mess off lately. Clay Holmes, despite making it to the All-Star roster, isn’t in the best of his form. The rest of the relief arms are also inconsistent per se. Hence, at the upcoming trade deadline, bullpen reinforcements will be on the front office’s priority list.

That being said, the options available in the trade market are slim, and hence, the New York Yankees must take a step after careful consideration. Meanwhile, ESPN MLB analyst Buster Olney suggested a blockbuster trade that could ship a rising star from Oakland all the way to the Bronx.

Will Yankees Pursue Mason Miller At Trade Deadline?

In an honest take, Buster Olney of ESPN strongly opined that the New York Yankees could not sustain in October without any roster improvements at the trade deadline. He urged the Yanks to focus not only on the infield but also on the bullpen depth. Interestingly, he suggested a blockbuster trade involving Oakland Athletics’ rising star Mason Miller. At just 25 years of age, Miller has his best years ahead of him. Acquiring a young pitcher with his skill set aligns with the Yanks’ goal of building a sustainable and competitive team not just for this season but also for the future. Despite his youth, Miller has shown that he can compete at a high level right now.

This season, Mason Miller has maintained a 2.27 ERA with 15 saves for the Oakland Athletics. Additionally, the reliever’s high strikeout rate is a valuable asset. The ability to generate strikeouts can be a game-changer, especially in tight games where every out counts. But at the same time, acquiring a promising talent like Mason Miller will not come cheap. The front office would likely need to part with a combination of top prospects to entice the Athletics. Overall, as the trade deadline approaches, all eyes will be on the New York Yankees to see if they make this aggressive move to secure one of baseball’s most promising young pitchers. Reinforcements are the need of the hour, and the front office will have to take the leap of faith to salvage the second half of the season before time eventually runs out.

Yanks Need A Long-Term Third Base Solution

Besides bullpen, third base is also a problem for the New York Yankees as DJ LeMahieu has been unproductive. He is hitting .178 with just one extra base hit in the month of July. In the wake of his prolong slump, skipper Aaron Boone pulled the plug on the veteran and benched him in the recent game against Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.

For now, utility player Oswaldo Cabrera will play every day as his immediate replacement at third base in the near future. However, the New York Yankees cannot rely on such temporary fixes for the rest of the season. They need to make a move at the upcoming trade deadline. Matt Chapman, Amed Rosario, and Luis Rengifo are a few options available on the market.
