The New York Yankees inspiring American League Pennant victory had many heroes but the one to stood out was Giancarlo Stanton who bagged the ALCS MVP honours for his four majestic homers. The slugger was coming of an injury riddled season but turned it around like magic in the postseason.

However, besides Giancarlo Stanton, the New York Yankees were also powered by a couple of individuals like Juan Soto who homered in Game 5’s 10th inning. Having said that, Yankee general manager Brian Cashman recently mentioned a key contributor who deserved MVP honors but went unnoticed due to Stanton’s firepower.

In the lead-up to the 2024 World Series, New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has showered praise on second baseman Gleyber Torres, commending his performance during the postseason and the latter half of the regular season. Torres, often under fire for his inconsistent play over the past couple of years, came alive when it mattered most, particularly during the team’s triumphant American League Championship Series (ALCS) against the Cleveland Guardians. Cashman, speaking to the media, was candid about Torres’ resurgence, highlighting his invaluable contributions and toughness throughout the ALCS. “This guy showed his toughness. He showed up when it counted the most. He might have been our MVP if it wasn’t for [Giancarlo] Stanton,” the GM said.

Giancarlo Stanton, who delivered one clutch performance after another during the New York Yankees’ postseason run, eventually won the ALCS MVP award, but Cashman’s comments make it clear that Torres wasn’t far behind. Torres hit timely home runs, made crucial defensive plays, and provided steady offensive production, helping propel the Yanks to their first World Series appearance since 2009. Having said that, for Torres, this postseason performance has been a long time coming. After a stellar start to his career, which included back-to-back All-Star selections, Torres’ production disappeared in the years following. His defense at shortstop came under scrutiny, and questions about his future in the franchise’s long-term plans began to swirl. However, after being moved back to second base full-time, where he’s most comfortable, Torres found his groove. “He is a heck of a hitting second baseman, and of course, we need everything he’s got to get past Dodgers,” Cashman added.

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone recently discussed the highly anticipated World Series, focusing on Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani. “Just how explosive of an athlete he is. This guy is flying,” Boone remarked, particularly noting Ohtani’s 50 stolen bases during the 2024 season.

Not only that, Aaron Boone also praised Ohtani’s power at the plate, describing the “stretch and torque” he generates while hitting. Shohei Ohtani, who had a stellar year with the Dodgers, cemented himself as one of baseball’s most dynamic talents, and Boone expressed that Ohtani’s historic 2024 season with the Dodgers was something special.
