Alex Verdugo’s transition to the New York Yankees didn’t pan out as expected since the outfielder is in the midst of a career-worst run. Verdugo’s OPS is below .600 and average below .260. Not only that, but he has yet to hit more than one home run in the second half of the 2024 season.

To add to the fans’ frustration, Alex Verdugo’s controversial ground out led to the New York Yankees series loss against the Texas Rangers. Amid a lack of urgency, WFAN radio host Keith McPherson lambasted Verdugo and the team for being unserious at a time when the division title is on the line.

The New York Yankees lost its third series in a row with a 10-6 loss to Texas Rangers on Wednesday. And one person who faced the most wrath following the game was left-fielder Alex Verdugo. He jogged his way to the ground out at first base, which left the fans irked. While Aaron Boone defended his player, saying he was beaten up, WFAN radio host Keith McPherson refused to buy it and lashed out at the outfielder. He opined that Verdugo’s lousy approach is unacceptable at a time when Jasson Dominguez is hitting home runs in the minor leagues. “Not when Jasson Dominguez is trying to come up and help this team,” Keith said.

Additionally, Keith McPherson claimed that Alex Verdugo is taking his place on the roster for granted and that jogging at first base on a ground out was a perfect testament to the same. “Now Verdugo’s job is safe. He can just ground out to second base, and the manager just takes up for him,” the radio host added. McPherson was more mad at the fact that the Yankees ended up dropping an easy series win. The host concluded his rant by saying that the team is unserious and absolutely lacks the sense required to win games amid tough situations. Overall, for Keith, the incident was emblematic of a larger issue, which was a perceived lack of urgency and intensity among some Yankees players. His comments reflected a belief that such lapses in effort could be symptomatic of a broader issue within the clubhouse culture.

Jasson Dominguez Continues To Score And Grab Yankees’ Attention

Meanwhile, top prospect Jasson Dominguez, who was initially sidelined for Alex Verdugo, is scoring runs like child’s play in the minor league. In a recent Triple-A game for the Yankee affiliate team, Jasson scored a home run and went 3-for-4 in an 11-5 win. The Thursday hit was Dominguez’s second in a row and seventh of the season.

It remains to be seen if this performance is enough to convince the New York Yankees front office to commit to Jasson Dominguez. With just three weeks left on the schedule, Alex Verdugo is certainly not improving. Perhaps promoting Jasson might not only solve the team’s left field crisis but also allow the kid to gain some crucial major-league experience.
