The New York Yankees are most likely to part ways with second baseman Gleyber Torres after denying him a qualifying offer. He also wiped off traces off Yanks on his social media, thus fuelling the speculations. Hence, in most likely scenario, the Bombers will have to look for a new infielder.

This off-season, the New York Yankees’ focus stays on Juan Soto. He is demanding $500-700 million contract, thus putting the Bombers in a fix. However, infield depth is also something the front office has to look at. Amid this, the Bombers were linked to a strong second base option from LA Dodgers in a strange trade deal.

The New York Yankees have an opportunity to address a looming vacancy at second base by pursuing a trade for Gavin Lux from the Los Angeles Dodgers. With Mookie Betts potentially shifting back to the infield, Lux’s future in LA appears uncertain, making him an appealing trade target for New York. Lux, 26, rebounded from a torn ACL in 2023 with a respectable 2024 season, finishing with a .251/.320/.383 slash line, 10 home runs, 50 RBIs, and a 2.1 bWAR across 138 games. While his offensive production was slightly above league average (101 OPS+), his defense at second base was a notable strength, an area where Gleyber Torres has struggled significantly.

Gleyber Torres, who has led the AL in errors multiple times, is unlikely to return in 2025, opening the door for a fresh option like Lux. Lux adds a much-needed lefty presence to a predominantly right-handed Yankees lineup, benefiting from Yankee Stadium’s short right-field porch. His pull/center approach would amplify his offensive potential in the Bronx. Moreover, acquiring Lux offers roster versatility. Jazz Chisholm could remain at third base or move to center field, allowing the Yankees to optimize their lineup. A flexible infield also positions them well for potential moves involving players like Alex Bregman or Willy Adames. The Dodgers might entertain trading Lux, given their surplus of infield talent with Betts, Max Muncy, and Miguel Vargas. Hence, the New York Yankees could capitalize on this surplus to secure a young, defensively sound player who aligns with their needs.

The New York Yankees are once again linked to right-hander Jack Flaherty as a potential offseason target, despite backing out of a trade for him with the Detroit Tigers at the 2024 deadline due to medical concerns. Flaherty subsequently joined the Los Angeles Dodgers and pitched against the Yankees in the World Series, showcasing his capabilities.

Flaherty completed his healthiest season in years, logging 162 innings with a strong 5-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. According to Jeff Passan, Flaherty might not reach a $100 million contract due to past health concerns, but his 2024 performance could still drive significant interest. If his market stays below this threshold, the Yankees could capitalize on his value without jeopardizing their financial flexibility for other priorities, such as re-signing superstar Juan Soto.
