The 2023 MLB trade deadline is in its last stages, and the New York Yankees are still contemplating their approach. Earlier, a report claimed that general manager Brian Cashman is looking to buy and sell simultaneously at the deadline. Due to heavy payroll, the club will refrain from adding notably big names. Having said that, the trade market is also shrinking at a faster pace.

The Yankees lost two prime outfield targets, Cody Bellinger and Randal Grichuk. While Bellinger was pulled off the market by Cubs, Grichuk landed with Angels. Moreover, another potent outfield candidate Jeimer Candelario also got traded away to the Cubs. Hence, the Yanks are left with limited to negligible outfield options for now. Owing to the circumstances, the club has had a change of heart at the last moment.

With their postseason aspirations hanging in the balance, the New York Yankees’ front office must now grapple with the difficult decision of whether to go all-in for a playoff push or take a step back and focus on building for the long term. Meanwhile, Joel Sherman of New York Post has reported that Bronx Bombers are willing to sell at the trade deadline. As per the article, the front office has informed various clubs that they are interested in hearing about offers for impending free agents. Those include Harrison Bader, Josh Donaldson, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Wandy Peralta, and Luis Severino. The primary objective behind the said move is to trim the soaring payroll. The team’s current payroll is close to the luxury tax threshold.

That high payroll is seemingly restricting the team from buying at the trade deadline. However, the decision to take a seller’s approach is not without risks and challenges. Leaving out someone like Harrison Bader would likely create a huge hole in the roster. Apart from being an electric hitter, Bader’s exceptional defensive skills in the center field make him a standout player. Hence, the Yanks must remain extremely careful and vigilant during trade negotiations. The situation within the camp is already very brim. The trades should not make the matter worse. Overall, whether the Yankees decide to embrace this approach or opt for a different course of action, the 2023 trade deadline promises to be an intriguing and pivotal moment in the team’s journey.

Luis Severino’s Rotation Spot Under Serious Threat

Meanwhile, New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino has had a terrible season so far. His ERA for the month of July has soared above 7. Moreover, Severino is an impending free agent. Hence, the chorus has grown for his immediate ouster from the pitching rotation. Amid these speculations, Yankees manager Aaron Boone hinted at a possible move. When asked if Severino will make another start in the near future, Boone said every possible scenario is on the table for now.

Last weekend, Severino got hammered by the Orioles as he leaked nine earned runs in mere 3.1 innings pitched. After the game, Luis admitted that he feels like the worst pitcher in the world. Nothing is seemingly working for him. Having said that, the pitcher has not lost any hope. For now, he will continue to work behind the scenes to get the execution right.
