Jon Berti Diagnosed With High-Grade Groin Strain In Latest MRI Report
The New York Yankees have been hit with a major injury blow as infielder Jon Berti is headed towards a long injury layoff following a scary incident on the field. Berti was reinstated from IL earlier this month after he recovered from a hamstring pull. However, in just 2 weeks, the third baseman picked up yet another setback. In the series against the Padres, Berti slipped while running on the groundball and looked in excruciating pain. He had to walk off the field with help as Jon couldn’t put pressure on his foot. That being said, Yankee manager Aaron Boone recently shared a health update on Jon Berti to confirm a potential long injury layoff.
As per the latest MRI scans, Jon Berti is suffering from a high-level grade groin strain, which could take months to heal. Aaron Boone added that it’s difficult to put a return timeline as the medical staff is still consulting multiple opinions from different doctors. However, the skipper fears that a grade 3 strain could lead to 6-12 months of layoff, which essentially means that Berti’s season could end prematurely. For now, Berti has returned to New York from the West Coast trip and will continue to recover under the care of the Yankee medical team. Notably, with Berti headed to the injury list, DJ LeMahieu is expected to take his place. He is likely to be reinstated from IL this week and will directly step into the third base position as a regular starter. Oswaldo Cabrera will serve as a backup infielder for the time being.
Yankees Ian Hamilton’s Return From COVID-19 Delayed
In yet another strange setback, New York Yankees relief pitcher Ian Hamilton was placed on 7-day COVID-19 IL. It marked the first MLB case of COVID in the past two years which naturally took the fans as well as analysts by surprise. On top of that, Hamilton’s return is likely to be delayed by an additional day.
Ian Hamilton’s timeline ended this weekend. However, Aaron Boone added that with a rest day coming up, it’s in the best interest of the reliever to take a day off and not rush while the season is still in May. Additionally, right-handed reliever Nick Burdi also landed back on 15-day IL after his hip inflammation injury relapsed after just five games.
