The New York Yankees know all too well about injuries. Last season was a special case when the team didn’t have enough resources to deal with the numerous injury cases. Moreover, key players like Aaron Judge, Anthony Rizzo, and even the young rookie Jasson Dominguez were on the injured list. The NY side did not have the Soto Effect last season, which they have now. Clearly, it makes a lot of difference when there are a couple of powerhouses in the clubhouse. They have three now, considering Giancarlo Stanton, besides Aaron Judge and Juan Soto.
But Stanton was there last year as well. Then, again, the Designated Hitter, too was on the IL last year. As a result, these injuries caused the offense to get a whole lot weaker. Even the starting pitchers, Carlos Rodon and Nestor Cortes suffered injuries. Hence, these injuries caused the disaster that unfolded last year for the NY Yankees. The Bronx Bombers would not want more injury scares to ruin the current ongoing season as well. Clearly, they have had enough last year. However, the latest news is pitcher Clarke Schmidt just got on the Injured List.
Clarke Schmidt On The IL Due To Right Lat Injury
On Thursday, the Yankees announced that the RHP Clarke Schmidt suffered a right lat strain. As a result, the team has placed the right-handed pitcher on the 15-day Injured List. Moreover, the Bronx Bombers also revealed that they have found a replacement for Schmidt from Triple-A. They have recalled Cody Morris, a right-handed reliever. This latest injury update on Schmidt comes right ahead of the final game of the three-game series between the NY Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night. In Game 1, the NY side narrowly lost to the Angels, 4-3. Later, in Game 2, the Bronx Bombers bounced back harder with a 2-1 win. It was another close encounter between the Angels and the Bombers.
Clarke Schmidt has played 11 games so far this season and recorded 67 strikeouts. Moreover, the RHP also recorded a 2.52 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. So far, Schmidt has pitched 60.2 innings this season. And he had a 5-3 record. Schmidt played an important role in helping the Yankees enjoy the best ERA throughout the early part of the season. The NY side has a 2.76 ERA in the majors at present. It is quite an achievement for the Pinstripes because they have done it without their ace pitcher, Gerrit Cole. Now, with Schmidt on the IL, the Yankees would need Cole to return as soon as possible on the mound.
Morris Might Be Helpful For The Yankees
In the absence of Schmidt, the NY side will hope for Cody Morris to take care of the relief. This season, for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the reliever has a 2.82 ERA over 22.1 innings. Moreover, he has played 13 games so far this season in Triple-A. Morris is 27 years old. The Yankees called him up earlier this season. However, Morris didn’t have an appearance.
The last time he stepped on the mound in MLB was in last August. He was with the Cleveland Guardians back then. Last year, in the majors, he had six appearances and recorded a 6.75 ERA along with a 2.00 WHIP over eight innings. But this time, he will be representing the New York Yankees. Moreover, Morris will hope to give their bullpen an added edge.
