The New York Yankees witnessed a logjam at infield in the 2023 MLB season. Top prospects like Oswald Peraza were denied deserving opportunities due to a lack of space on the everyday lineup. Of course, Anthony Volpe’s addition was a major exception. But the kid exceeded expectations in his rookie season to justify his selection.

Having said that, for the 2024 season, the New York Yankees choose not to mess with the infield lineup. Gleyber Torres has been extended for one more season. Anthony Volpe and Anthony Rizzo will live to see another year of daylight in the Bronx. Having said that, as far as depth is concerned, the Yanks seem to be interested in moving a couple of pieces.

Gio Urshela, a versatile infielder with a solid defensive reputation, has emerged as a potential target for the New York Yankees. As per Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the Yanks, New York Mets, and Miami Marlins are currently in play for Urshela. Urshela is known for his exceptional glove work and ability to play multiple infield positions. He served three years with the Bronx Bombers and became a fan favorite in 2019. Gio was later traded to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for Josh Donaldson and Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Having said that, the infielder delivered yet another strong season in 2023. He hit .299 over 62 games with the LA Angels before a pelvis injury ended his season prematurely.

Having said that, Gio Urshela is unlikely to bag a starter’s role with the New York Yankees in the 2024 season. Anthony Volpe is expected to continue at shortstop, with Anthony Rizzo continuing at first base. Additionally, Gleyber Torres will take over second base, and DJ LeMahieu will continue at third base. Additionally, if the franchise needs reinforcements in case of an injury crisis, Oswald Peraza and Oswaldo Cabrera be called up. Thus, as it stands, Gio Urshela, if acquired, will serve as an infield depth, at least for the 2024 season. Having said that, if the Yanks successfully acquire Urshela, it would significantly enhance the team’s infield depth and overall roster versatility. Urshela’s defensive prowess and offensive consistency would solidify the team’s infield defense and provide additional run-scoring opportunities.

Meanwhile, Robert Murray of Fansided claimed that the New York Yankees are showing considerate interest in utility player Tony Kemp. Kemp served with Oakland Athletics and recorded a decent season in 2023. He is known for his defensive versatility and speed on the basepaths. Kemp brings a different skill set to the table, which the Yank can benefit largely from.

But then again, the lack of roster spots means that Tony Kemp will also be required to settle as a depth piece. Regardless, the Yankees’ reported interest in Gio Urshela and Tony Kemp reflects their proactive approach to roster management. And their commitment to fielding a competitive team in the upcoming season. By targeting infield reinforcements, the team aims to address potential weaknesses and enhance roster depth.
