The upcoming free agency will bring a lot of challenges for the New York Yankees as the front office aims to plug the leaking holes heading into the next season. The Yanks lost World Series in 2024 mostly due to awful outfield defense, abysmal bullpen pitching and lack of quality hitting.

Hence, bolstering pitching depth will surely be on New York Yankees cards this off-season. Options in the market are diverse and lengthy. However, the front office must make a calculative decision to manage the payroll as well. But more or less, bullpen reinforcements are inevitable this off-season.

Yankees To Eye Top Relievers In Free Agency

As the offseason kicks off, the New York Yankees find themselves in a precarious bullpen position, potentially needing to replace 105.2 innings of quality relief. With both setup man Tommy Kahnle and All-Star closer Clay Holmes testing free agency, the Yanks could lose two vital pitchers who were integral to their success in the 2024 season. Their combined efforts contributed not only to securing key wins during the regular season but also to the Yankees’ postseason run that ultimately led to a World Series berth. Kahnle, at age 35, was remarkably effective in his eighth-inning role. Finishing the season with a 2.11 ERA and a 1.148 WHIP, he struck out 46 batters and provided stability to the bullpen in high-leverage situations.

Clay Holmes, meanwhile, has become a staple in the closer role, recording 30 saves in 2024, the seventh most in the MLB, and posting a solid 3.14 ERA. His ability to secure critical saves was instrumental in the Yankees’ 94-win season, which earned them the American League’s top seed. Although Holmes’ ERA rose slightly compared to his previous seasons, his dependability at the back end of games played a pivotal role in the team’s journey to the playoffs. Losing both Kahnle and Holmes would mean replacing not just innings but also an unmatched level of trust and experience in crucial moments. In response, Yankee management is actively exploring the market for established bullpen arms to offset these potential losses. Among the relievers linked to the team are Tanner Scott, Kirby Yates, and Carlos Estevez. All three pitchers could step into significant roles and help fill the void.

The New York Yankees declined Anthony Rizzo’s club option for the 2025 season and have reportedly shown interest in free agent Christian Walker. Following an impressive stint with the Diamondbacks, Walker is projected to land a three-year, $60 million deal. Despite his age, Walker’s consistent offensive production and elite defense make him a sought-after asset.

Over the past three seasons, Walker has maintained a .250/.332/.481 slash line with 95 home runs. Additionally, he’s a three-time Gold Glove winner, adding defensive value that could stabilize the infield. Although the Yankees would have to surrender two draft picks and $1 million in international bonus money to sign Walker due to luxury tax penalties, his projected performance could be worth the investment.
