With the New York Yankees falling at a 56-39 record, the front office has buckled up with general manager Brian Cashman and owner Hal Steinbrenner conducting a mid-season review. With the trade deadline approaching in about two weeks, the team is aggressively looking out for external solutions.
That being said, the New York Yankees have been linked to multiple candidates for a few weeks, including various infield and bullpen solutions. Meanwhile, in the latest rumor, the Bronx bombers have reportedly approached the Miami Marlins’ outfielder turned infielder with a view to playing him regularly at the infield. However, the Yanks are not the only ones vying for his services.
Yankees, Mariners In Play To Trade For Jazz Chisholm Jr!
The New York Yankees have glaring holes to fill at infield this season. With Anthony Rizzo down with a fracture injury and DJ LeMahieu struggling with form, the Yanks need external reinforcement. Moreover, with days left for the August 1 trade deadline, the Bombers front office has apparently dialed up Miami Marlins to enquire about the availability of OF/INF Jazz Chisholm Jr. The dynamic infielder and outfielder could provide the Yans with a much-needed spark both offensively and defensively. This year, he is hitting .256 with 11 home runs and 41 RBIs across 89 games with Marlins. At just 26, Jazz Jr is viewed as the next big thing waiting to explode in MLB.
However, the New York Yankees are expected to face tough competition from the Seattle Mariners as the latter have also approached the Marlins for a potential trade offer. That being said, if the team ends up losing Jazz at some point, Luis Rengifo is the next best candidate available for the Yanks. Notably, Rengifo has also attracted many suitors with a rebound season. However, with the right offer, the Bombers should succeed in striking a deal. Jonathan India is also a good option. However, the Reds have witnessed a surge lately, and hence, they are not expected to sell at the trade deadline. Overall, the Yanks have a limited pool of options to choose from. It’s important the club makes an informed decision by keeping both short-term and long-term repercussions in mind.
GM Brian Cashman Vows To Keep Open Mind During Trade Deadline
Meanwhile, New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman visited the team in Tampa in the wake of the team’s unacceptable losing streak. He spoke to the media reporters and admitted that the team’s stretch is bad and they need to come out better as a team. “We got to be playing better than we currently are right now,” Cashman said.
Notably, Brian Cashman was in town to discuss draft and trade strategies with the New York Yankees leadership group. He said that the front office will go in with an open mind and eye for external options that they feel are necessary to bolster the roster. “We just got to figure our way through this ourselves, and hopefully we can add some outside pieces at some point,” Cashman added.
