The New York Yankees had an extra four weeks to contemplate their off-season moves as a poor run threw them out of the playoffs. While the entire front office stayed mum throughout these four weeks, rumors and wild speculations kept on doing rounds. As off-season formally commenced this week, the Yanks are determined to make an impact.

Roster construction will remain a top priority this winter. The Yankees need to strike the right balance and ensure that the players stay healthy throughout the 162-game stretch. Having said that, the Yanks’ first and surprising off-season moves suggest that Hal Steinbrenner is in the mood for a complete roster overhaul.

The off-season formally commenced this week, and the New York Yankees wasted no time in making moves. However, the initial move caught the fans by complete surprise. Joel Sherman of the New York Post informed that the Bombers had put Domingo German, Matt Bowman, Franchy Cordero, Jimmy Cordero, Billy McKinney, and Ryan Weber on outright waivers. All six of them would remain available to claim for other teams till Monday. Post that, they are allowed to elect free agency. The move to outright as many as six players surely wasn’t something any fan or analyst anticipated. Having said that, it’s also important to note that all these outright players were non-tender candidates.

Domingo German’s exit is debatable. He began the season with a rare perfect game and ended with landing on the restricted list, owning to an alcohol abuse incident. Also, on the mound, German has been largely inconsistent. Jimmy Cordero, on the other hand, faced a suspension due to domestic abuse charges. Francy Cordero and Billy McKinney served as offensive reinforcements during crunch movements. But failed to make a deep impact. Matt Bowman had limited chances, and so did Ryan Weber. Overall, these moves clearly indicate that the Yankees intend to overhaul the entire roster ahead of the 2024 season. They are expected to add more players during free agency to strike the right balance and also to ensure that the repeat of the 2023 season never happens ever again.

As the off-season kicked off this week, New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner will reportedly address a key press conference soon. It’s their annual tradition wherein they address the fans through the media at the conclusion of each season. This year, since their season ended unusually early, the press meet was delayed. But not anymore. Steinbrenner, along with GM Brian Cashman, will hold the key meeting soon.

Meanwhile, ahead of the press conference, Yankee podcaster Jomboy demanded some real answers. He says that Hal Steinbrenner must not repeat the script he had been reading for the past many seasons. The Yankees owner must get real and offer some insights on the team’s off-season plans. The fans and supporters do not deserve to be kept in the dark. Period. Having said that, the fans must keep their expectations in check. The audit has not happened yet. Thus, Steinbrenner has nothing on his desk to offer to the supporters.
