The New York Yankees bounced back from the ugly 12-2 loss against the Chicago White Sox to clinch a series victory in the next two games. Will Warren made a spot start in finale and allowed just 2 runs in five innings. The relievers did a decent job of restricting the White Sox to just 2 runs as the Yanks claimed a 10-2 victory.
Having said that, the New York Yankees entered an off-day on Thursday and will travel to Detroit to participate in a three-game series against the Tigers. Moreover, ahead of the pivotal series, the team announced a couple of roster moves where a catcher has been reinstated from IL and essentially moved to a new role.
Jose Trevino Returns To Active Roster After Successful Rehab Assignment
Jose Trevino had established himself as a key defensive asset behind the plate for the New York Yankees. However, a hip injury sidelined him for a significant portion of the season. During his absence, the Bronx Bombers had to adapt, giving everyday opportunities to younger players like Austin Wells, who impressed both offensively and defensively. Wells, a promising young catcher, made the most of his chance in Trevino’s absence. He was moved to an everyday role and produced consistent hits on the plate while being an excellent backstop. Hence, Yankees manager Aaron Boone decided to retain Wells in his everyday role and instead shift Trevino to a backup catching position.
Jose Trevino wrapped his rehab assignment in the minor league earlier this week and was reinstated on Thursday. Carlos Narváez has been optioned back to Triple-A to make a spacer for the veteran backstop. However, the structure of the playing time will remain the same in the near future. Austin Wells will see an increase in his opportunities, whereas Trevino will play as a backup catcher. Having said that, in his new capacity as a backup, Trevino is expected to provide valuable depth and experience behind the plate. While this might be a different role than he’s accustomed to, Trevino’s professionalism and team-first mentality make him a perfect fit for the transition. He will likely see action in a limited games, particularly against left-handed pitchers. Overall, Trevino’s experience will also be crucial in mentoring Wells, who navigates the challenges of being a rookie in majors.
Yankees DFA Trade Addition After Just Two Weeks
In a surprising roster move, the New York Yankees designated relief pitcher Enyel De Los for assignment after just weeks of his mid-season trade acquisition. In five games, De Los allowed 10 runs in 6.1 inning pitched, including a seven-run implosion against the White Sox in series opener which led to humiliating 12-2 loss.
Meanwhile, Enyel De Los was DFA’d to make space for minor league prospect Will Warren. The starting pitcher pitched a spot start in the series finale to give the Yankees a 10-2 victory to seal the away series. However, after the spot start, Warren was sent back to Triple-A as relief pitcher Scott Effross took his place on the active roster.
