Mercedes AMG Pertronas F1 team is facing a sea of problem this year as the revised concept of W15 failed to do wonders. The machinery lacks race pace and is a menace to drive due to it’s high unpredictability and balance issues. However, in Montreal, things are expected to change.
In the Monaco Grand Prix, a major controversy erupted with Mercedes gave the new upgraded front wing to just George Russell and not Lewis Hamilton which resulted in drastic difference in performance of the two teammates. But in Canada, the team finally has a wing for both the drivers. And the wing is expected to eradicate W15’s big reliability issue.
Mercedes’ New Front Wing To Bring Balance Through All Corners
Ahead of the Canada Grand Prix, Mercedes has introduced a brand new upgraded front wing for both George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, unlike Monaco. The front wing is expected to solve the reliability issues of the W15. Notably, the team’s biggest problem this season has been W15’s off-balance in low and high-speed corners. If an improvement is introduced in one turn, the other takes a hit due to balancing and bouncing issues. That results in a loss of lap time. Hence, to curb that problem, Mercedes has designed a new wing that has greater aero-balance consistency in different speed ranges. As long as the aero characteristics do not see a shift, the W15 could be much more stable in all corner ranges.
That being said, it’s still unclear how Mercedes plans to achieve stable aerodynamics with the help of the front wing; it’s likely to use the complexities of flexi-wings. Notably, when the wing’s elements are flexed back to a small range at high speed, it can reduce its downforce-producing characteristics to help with this balance issue. A lot of teams have used flexi wings in recent times to achieve consistency, and the Silver Arrows appear to be headed in the same direction. Additionally, the team has passed FIA’s flexibility test for the new front wing and is confident of achieving the desired results with the upgraded element. However, due to the cancellation of the FP1 and FP2 sessions due to adverse weather, the German manufacturers have just one practice session left to test the new front wing on the track.
Lewis Hamilton Fuels Rivalry With Teammate George Russell
In Monaco, Lewis Hamilton sparked indifferent treatment speculations after he suggested that he would never be able to outqualify George Russell in qualifying this entire season. However, Hamilton’s tone changed on the way to Canada. In Montreal, Mercedes will fit the brand-new upgraded front wing to both cars.
Hence, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will finally run on an equal set up on Montreal. However, when Lewis was quizzed on media day that will he be able to beat Russell in qualifying, Hamilton said he will try with a sneaky smile. Undoubtedly, the internal war is expected to perpetuate until Lewis hangs his black suit by the end of the year.
