The drivers push their limits during an intense race, chasing victory with intense passion and emotion. The adrenaline pumps through the veins, often resulting in foul language. It is common for a driver to express frustration in such high-pressure situations. However, the race weekends are followed by a young audience, so the use of explicit language could be immoral.

While teh fans are divided on this take, FIA president Ben Sulayem has affirmed that using excessive “bad” words is unsuitable for sports.  Recently, Max Verstappen was on the receiving end when he used an explicit word during the press conference. While describing the current RB20 struggles, the Dutchman used an expletive, prompting strict action against him.

FIA Labels Verstappen’s Remark As “Misconduct,” Orders Public Service Work

Max Verstappen faced disciplinary action following the pre-weekend press conference at the Singapore Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver was summoned to the stewards after using inappropriate language to describe the RB20’s performance in Azerbaijan, sparking an official review by the FIA. The governing body, which places emphasis on maintaining a professional and respectful tone in public forums, took issue with Verstappen’s choice of words during the conference.

After reviewing the audio transcript and hearing statements from Verstappen and Red Bull representatives, the FIA stewards highlighted the importance of adhering to public standards in language use, especially for drivers who are role models in the sport. Though the expletive wasn’t directed at anyone specifically, the FIA ruled that Verstappen’s actions constituted “misconduct” under Article 20 of the International Sporting Code. As a result, Verstappen was ordered to carry out “public interest work” to account for the incident, serving as a reminder of the responsibilities F1 drivers hold as public figures.

During the Singapore press conference, Max Verstappen expressed surprise and confusion about the penalty imposed on him for his language. The Red Bull driver, seemingly baffled by the decision, described the situation as “bizarre” and chose not to dwell too much on the matter, feeling that anything he said might not warrant further attention.

When informed of the FIA’s decision to assign him public service work, Verstappen admitted he hadn’t expected such a ruling. He appeared unfazed by the penalty, viewing it as a minor issue that didn’t warrant his energy. The Dutchman speculated that he might attend a conference, possibly through a video call, to fulfill the required community service, suggesting that he was ready to comply but wasn’t overly concerned about the specifics.
