The New York Yankees will want to keep Juan Soto for a long-term contract. However, he is not going to be just another free agent next offseason. Like Shohei Ohtani, who was the biggest name available in the last offseason, the Dominican superstar is going to be just that in the next. But at present, the 2020 NL Batting champion is looking to help the Bronx Bombers win the 2024 World Series. However, even if the Dominican slugger helps the NY side to make it to the “Big Dance,” he would be a fan favorite in the Bronx for all ages.

After all, the Yankees have not made it to the World Series since 2009. But this year, they look like they have a good chance to get there. Moreover, the Aaron Judge-Juan Soto duo has already started to make a lot of noise. However, at the end of the day, it comes down to the payroll issue of the NY side and what number would make Scott Boras, the agent of Juan Soto, happy. That would determine where the former Washington Nationals slugger would stay for the long term.

Recently, in an interview with USA Today, Scott Boras mentioned that it is a different story when the contract is for a “Generational talent” like Juan Soto. According to Boras, talents like Soto are not part of the budget really. In fact, the baseball agent believes that talents like that are part of how teams grow assets. Moreover, Boras calls Soto a “Different breed.” Adding to that, Soto’s agent says, “The cost of the monument is the only cost concern.” However, things are not looking good for Hal Steinbrenner and his franchise in terms of their payroll. During the MLB owners’ meetings, the Yankees owner said the truth is that the levels of payrolls they are at right now are simply not financially sustainable for them.

At present, the payroll of the Yankees is $300 million. Moreover, the cuts to the roster should come in buying young and cheaper players. For instance, the NY side can quite possibly let the All-Star Gleyber Torres go after the current season. In exchange of the second baseman, the Yankees can sign another young prospect. Then, Torres will enter free agency. Looking at the Yankees payroll, it will be difficult for them to keep the same team next season. In the case of Juan Soto, Scott Boras will let the market dictate his value. Even when he was part of the Nationals, Soto declined the offer of a massive long term contract, despite he won a World Series with them.

Moreover, as per Scott Boras, Juan Soto will look for a contract value that’s north of $500 million. After all, he won’t be a typical free agent. He is just 25 years old. Moreover, Soto is a future prospect for a Hall Of Fame induction. Hence, it does not matter to Boras, but he will get Soto that big contract from the Yankees or elsewhere.

However, Juan Soto has become so comfortable in the Bronx, especially with the fans. Over 250 plate appearances in 55 games, he has hit 14 home runs and 44 RBIs. Moreover, he has slashed .310/.408/.571. Currently, the Yankees have the third-best record in MLB in 2024.
