Kenny Atkinson Warriors
Golden State Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr congratulates assistant coach Kenny Atkinson in the closing minutes in Game 5 of the NBA basketball playoffs Western Conference finals against the Dallas Mavericks in San Francisco, Calif. Thursday, May 26, 2022.

The Golden State Warriors had one of the worst seasons they could imagine to have this year. It seems like the end of the Dubs Dynasty. Who knows if they could win another championship in the next few seasons? Clearly, the trio of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson are way off their prime days. But it seems like they still have some more basketball left in them. Is it enough to win another championship? Only time can answer that. But the way the 2023-2024 season ended for the Dubs, it was disappointing, to say the least. Klay Thompson had the worst performance for the Golden State Warriors when it mattered the most.

In the play-in game against the Sacramento Kings, the Splash Brother of Steph Curry had a scoreless night. As a result, it weakened the Warrior’s offense. Eventually, the Kings knocked the Warriors out of the season. Now, in the offseason, Klay Thompson will be an unrestricted free agent. On the other hand, Steph and Dray are still under contract with the Dubs. Now, what will the Warriors do about Klay? Other than this big concern, the Dubs can make more changes in their personnel. Lately, as per rumors, the Dub’s assistant coach may move to Cleveland.

In the 2023-2024 season, the Golden State Warriors had a horrible season in their standards. They finished as the tenth seed of the Western Conference. Later, in the first postseason game, the play-in game against the Sacramento Kings, they lost miserably. As a result, the Warriors missed the playoffs lately. Nonetheless, it is undeniable that in modern times, the Dubs are one of the best organizations in basketball. Hence, personnel from their front office to the coaching staff are always eligible for other jobs in the NBA. On Sunday, The Athletic’s Jason Lloyd reported that Kenny Atkinson of the Warriors can move to the Cleveland Cavaliers as their head coach.

He has been the assistant coach in the GSW for a very long time. According to Lloyd, there are a few potential candidates for the head coach position in the Cavaliers organization. Other than Atkinson, there are names like Johnnie Bryant of the New York Knicks who can get the Cavs job. Bryant is the associate head coach of the Knicks. He was also an assistant of the Utah Jazz team when Donovan Mitchell was part of the Jazz. Then, Lloyd says Dan Gilbert is on the list of potential candidates, too. Last week, the Cavaliers sacked JB Bickerstaff.

Kenny Atkinson was part of the team that won the 2022 NBA championship. He has been part of the Warriors for the last three years. 2022 was special as they beat Boston in Boston. From 2017 to 2020, Atkinson was the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. When the team was going through a rebuilding phase, Atkinson played a big part.

Now, the Warriors look like they need to rebuild the team if they want to fight for the title again. On the other hand, Atkinson can really help the Cavaliers rebuild, too. Lately, they lost against the Boston Celtics in the second round. But for the next season, they need a new head coach. Now, who’s that going to be?
