The Golden State Warriors can get in on the action as soon as free agency starts on June 30. Clearly, they did not have a season to remember in the 2023-2024 edition. Key players like Draymond Green and Klay Thompson had a very disappointing year. Very early in the last season, the veteran forward messed up the momentum with a couple of back-to-back suspensions. Then, the shooting guard was struggling with his average. It saw a big dip as Klay had his lowest average since the 2012-2013 season. Moreover, he will be the biggest concern for the GSW in terms of free agency.
The franchise does not seem like willing to let him go, but there has been “No notable movements” regarding Thompson’s contract extension, as per The Athletic’s Anthony Slater. However, Klay is not the only concern for the Warriors once the free agency starts. They have to trade and sign from several options available. Moreover, the Dubs organization will be eager to build a team that makes the playoffs in the following seasons.
Warriors Are Looking To Trade Andrew Wiggins
A couple of years ago, Andrew Wiggins was an All-Star player. But in the 2023-2024 season, like Thompson and Green, Wiggins too disappointed the fans and the organization. Recently, The Ringer’s Logan Murdock reported that the Warriors will be “Aggressively” looking for trade partners for a number of players on their roster. Murdock also mentioned Andrew Wiggins as a potential trade option after a disappointing season. He wrote that the league sources suggested that since Wiggins struggled to find a consistent role last season, the Dubs will dangle him in aggressive trade talks. Back when Wiggins used to be an All-Star level player, he used to be a secondary scoring option for the Warriors behind their talisman Stephen Curry.
Moreover, the former All-Star player has also been the first overall pick back in his day. However, last season, he struggled to find a groove. In the 2023-2024 season, Wiggins averaged 13 points per contest. However, prior to the last season, in the two editions before that, he averaged 17 ppg each year. Moreover, their shooting percentage from the field and from three-point range was down for Andrew Wiggins. Despite struggling offensively, the Warriors can always bet on Wiggins for the defensive value that he brings to the table. Perhaps the Dubs might use that factor in a way to strike a deal with other teams in free agency.
Dubs Are Still Not Sure About Klay Thompson
Slater of The Athletic said there were no talks regarding Thompson’s contract extension. But time is running away as on June 30, the sharpshooter will become an unrestricted free agent. Moreover, there are several potential suitors like the Orlando Magic and the Philadelphia 76ers. These teams have a better payroll and cap space to land Klay Thompson. They would love to sign the veteran All-Star for his offensive as well as defensive skills.
Klay was an All-Star, but this year, he was nowhere near the All-Star selections because that’s how disappointing his numbers were. Nonetheless, Steve Kerr, the head coach recently, said he and the team wants desperately to get him back. But The Athletic’s Slater and Shams Charania reported that Thompson is looking to explore all his external options in free agency.
