Brian Cashman’s two-decade-long career as New York Yankees general manager has not always been flawless. Cashman has messed up a trade or two, including the Josh Donaldson trade. In 2022, the Bronx Bombers acquired Josh, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Ben Rortvedt in exchange for Gary Sanchez and Gio Urshela.

However, Josh Donaldson registered two injury-riddled seasons and became an enemy of Yankee fanbase. In 2023, things went from bad to worse as the veteran third baseman appeared for less than 20 games. Eventually, the New York Yankees cut him off around the all-star break. That being said, after a tough recent past, Donaldson has announced a big career decision.

In a recent podcast hosted by Sean Casey, Josh Donaldson formally announced his retirement from MLB after a 13-year-long journey. The third baseman said he had the opportunity to play for a couple of years more. But with having a family and kids growing up, he reckoned closing the curtains as the best choice. He further reflected on his troublesome tenure with the Yankees and expressed regret for not being able to unleash his true potential. “I just wished I could have played better while my time was there. I felt like I was capable of doing it. I just didn’t go do it,” said Donaldson. Notably, after two average seasons, the veteran was released by the Yanks mid-season in 2023. He then found solace in Brewers.

That being said, Josh Donaldson’s tenure with the Yankees was marked by controversy and mixed emotions from fans and teammates alike. Acquired by the Yankees in a high-profile trade, Donaldson’s arrival was met with high expectations. However, his time in New York was far from smooth sailing. His on-field struggles were compounded by off-field controversies, including clashes with the opposition. Despite efforts to turn things around, Donaldson’s performance continued to decline throughout the 2023 season. His slumps only added to the Yankee fans’ growing frustration. As the season wore on, it became clear that Donaldson’s days as a top-tier player were behind him. Regardless, as Josh Donaldson bids farewell to the game he loves, he leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered for years to come.

The retirement announcement of former Yankee despised player Josh Donaldson has brought a wave of relief and jubilation among Yankees fans. Donaldson’s tumultuous tenure with the team was marked by underwhelming performance, controversies, and strained relationships, leading to frustration and disappointment among fans. For Yankee faithful, Donaldson’s abrupt retirement represents the end of an era filled with disappointment and unmet expectations.

Many fans had grown disillusioned with Donaldson’s on-field struggles and off-field controversies, making his departure from the team a welcome development. However, regardless of his underwhelming stint with the Yankees, one mustn’t undermine the veteran third baseman’s achievement. When the Yanks traded him, he was one of the best infielders in the league. His retirement might not be a fairy tale ending. But Josh surely deserves respect as a veteran MLB player.
