Sergio Perez and Christian Horner
RBR News

The Red Bull team is currently the most advanced in terms of its F1 prospects. The team looks nearly unbeatable with the best driver and a powerful car. Moreover, the reigning world champions are on the right track to defend the title, as Max Verstappen is yet again showing his masterclass.

However, Sergio Perez might hinder their run for the world championship. The experienced Mexican has been an integral part of the setup. On occasions, he has matched the pace of Verstappen, scoring equal, if not more, points than the triple champion. Subsequently, the RBR racer hit a blockade as he struggled to score points. This is the biggest concern for the Milton Keynes-based management as the chasing packs are getting closer.

The social media graphic by the Red Bull Racing team post-Silverstone GP summarises the current scenario. While Max Verstappen finished at P2, Sergio Perez was limping to enter the top ten, ultimately ending his race at P17. This striking contrast is the major cause of distress for Horner & CO. The team recently extended Checo’s contract despite having several other options to replace him. Rookies like Liam Lawson and veterans like Daniel Ricciardo were in the queue to partner up with Verstappen. However, the RBR principal showcased trust in the Mexican racer and extended his contract. Since the announcement, Checo has scored 11 points in five outings.

Moreover, the Silverstone weekend was another disappointment as Checo filed to enter Q1. As a result, he had to start from the back of the grid, only managing to finish at P17. Thus, Horner acknowledged this and claimed it to be ‘unsustainable’ for the team as the competition is consistently rising. Further, the British motorsport executive emphasized the importance of scoring points in a car like RB20. Moreover, Horner feels Checo is aware of the circumstances, and no one is more eager than him to regain the form. However, he expressed frustration at both cars not performing collectively, leaving the team in the midst of nowhere. Ultimately, the Red Bull chief remains optimistic about a turnaround as they’ll introduce a new floor in Hungary.

The Mexican driver will get the necessary break ahead of the next event in Hungary. The days away from the racing track would help him to introspect and understand the situation better. Thus, he would come fully prepared for the next weekend.

Moreover, Checo has performed well in the Hungarian GP. In 2022, he finished in the top five and improved by two positions the following year. Therefore, Sergio Perez’s past excellence on the track and a sabbatical would hopefully turn things around.
