REPORTS: Anthony Rizzo Hoping To Be Available For The Yankees On The Opening Day

Anthony Rizzo had been raising hopes for the New York Yankees in the spring training so far. Last year, the veteran first baseman was on the Injured List for a long time. He was suffering from a post-concussion syndrome. Later, he described the condition, saying, “At that time, I could not even see the ball.” Anyhow, the 2023 season is well past everybody. But the failure of last year is still very fresh for the NY side players. Prominent players of the team, like Aaron Judge, Anthony Rizzo, DJ LeMahieu, and Gerrit Cole, have been part of the Yankees for a while now.

For them, the 82-80 record was a tremendous shame. That wound is still fresh for these veteran players. They want to make a difference this year. The whole organization is looking for redemption. Moreover, the Yankees have reinforced their offense and outfield in the offseason. All they need to do now is to stay healthy and play as many games as possible. But in the spring training, there have already been a few cases of injuries in the Yankees locker room. Lately, Anthony Rizzo seemed to have sustained an injury.

The first baseman of the NY side, Rizzo had a pretty good Grapefruit League so far. He averaged .412 and hit a couple of homers and nine RBIs in 14 games. After a terrible 2023 season, Rizzo was looking very healthy to start the new season on the Opening Day in Houston. However, lately, in the game against the New York Mets, Aaron Boone pulled Anthony out of the lineup. Prior to the game against the city rivals, Boone named Rizzo the first baseman. But the Yankees manager had to later replace Rizzo with Luis Torrens. Later, The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty reported that Boone talked to YES Network about Anthony’s tight lat. As per Aaron Boone, Rizzo did not look too concerned with the injury issue.

Anthony Rizzo was like, “It’s something I’ve experienced every now and then during the season.” More importantly, he just wanted to be certain. Later, Rizzo told Meredith Marakovits that he was totally confident that he would be able to play on the Opening Day. Adding to that, Anthony Rizzo mentioned the reason why Boone pulled him out was “Only precaution.” The Yankees may have Aaron Judge and Juan Soto in the lineup this year. But Rizzo forms an essential depth for the hitting order of the NY side.

Yankees Players Who Are Questionable For The Opening Day

First of all, there is the ace pitcher and the 2023 AL Cy Young winner, Gerrit Cole. He sustained a right elbow injury during the Grapefruit League games. Later, the team doctors ruled him out for one to two months. In his absence, the Yankees decided Nestor Cortes will start on the Opening Day. On the other hand, the infielder Oswald Peraza will miss at least six weeks due to a right shoulder strain.

He could have become a permanent member of the Yankees infield in 2024. But currently, the team is looking for a replacement. Moreover, the Yankees captain took a break from spring training for a while to get ready for the Opening Day. Lately, he suffered an abs injury. Since then, he has been questionable for the Opening Day. And so are DJ LeMahieu and Anthony Rizzo.
