New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone took strict measures against non performing veteran including Gleyber Torres as the team stood at the risk of a regression. The second baseman was benched following an costly error against the New York Mets in the Subway series opener.
Aaron Boone argued that the break was meant to help Gleyber Torres rejuvenate mentally as the grind has taken a toll on him. Meanwhile, after much needed 2-game break, Torres was included in game 2 against the Blue Jays on Friday. Torres used his opportunity right to shut down critics once and for all.
Yankees Gleyber Torres Snaps Out Of Slump With 2-Run Homer
After a brief benching, Gleyber Torres made a triumphant return to the New York Yankees lineup, delivering a standout performance that underscored his value to the team. With series at stake, the Yanks stepped out of Rogers Center to tackle the Blue Jays. The visitors had a great start courtesy of Juan Soto’s 3-run home run. However, the 6 runs in the sixth inning changed things drastically for the Bombers. With second base loaded, Torres drilled a fastball off reliever Nate Pearson to 385 feet to put the Yanks up by 7-3. The infielder also added a sacrifice flyout in the ninth inning in what turned out to be his first multi-hit game this month. Needless to say, the 2-game break worked as the Yankees finished with a 16-5 mega victory.
That being said, Gleyber Torres was proud of himself as he finally helped his team in some capacity. He says that his home run is a reflection of the hard work he has put in behind the scenes. Torres went on to add that he feels more focused after snapping out of the slump on Friday. The idea is to not put any extra baggage of pressure and stay focused while taking one pitch at a time. “I think in the past, I was a little more frustrated, but tonight, it was more motivated,” Torres said while explaining his approach on the plate. Notably, Torres had a heated moment during the game with teammate Marcus Stroman, who yelled at him for a bad throw that foiled the double play attempt. However, Stroman made amends after Gleyber scored a two-run home run and extended the Yankees’ lead to a comfortable margin.
Torres Faces Marcus Stroman’s Heat
Gleyber Torres isn’t getting any better with the glove at second base as he messed up a double play on Friday against the Blue Jays which irked Marcus Stroman. He yelled at Torres on the field and his rage continued in the dugout before Aaron Judge stepped into calm the pitcher down and put things into perspective.
However, Gleyber Torres didn’t take Stroman’s outburst to heart. He slammed a two-run homer in the next inning and Marcus was the first one to congratulate him in the dugout. Torres clarified that Stroman is a great teammate who supports everyone. Hence, he understands his emotional spillover and is not at all hurt.
