In a season typified by close calls and wasted opportunities, McLaren has been on the verge of victory several times. As the squad navigates a succession of tiny but expensive missteps, the probability of triumph stays close to one.

Recent performances have demonstrated incredible speed and resilience, but strategic errors have prevented them from taking the top rank. Despite these hurdles, the team’s confidence, notably that of emerging star Oscar Piastri, implies that McLaren is on the verge of a breakthrough.

McLaren has been hampered by small errors this year, most recently at the British Grand Prix. Oscar Piastri’s chances of winning were dashed when he was fitted with intermediate tyres a lap too late at Silverstone. Similar mistakes cost him potential victories in Imola and Austria. Despite these setbacks, Piastri remains confident in both his and McLaren’s ability to secure a win.

In an interview with select media, Piastri expressed his readiness to claim victory. He pointed out that while various issues have thwarted their efforts, the positive takeaway is that these errors have not been repetitive. At Silverstone, it was a wrong tyre call; in Imola, traffic issues during qualifying caused problems; and Austria had its own set of qualifying challenges.

The young Australian driver emphasized that the team’s diverse mistakes, rather than a single recurring problem, have been the issue. Further, he noted that both sides of the garage have faced situations where they felt a race win was within reach. Importantly, he acknowledged that McLaren has already mastered the hardest part—they have an incredibly fast car. Now, they just need to capitalize on this speed to secure a victory.

Despite the frustration of missing out on a potential victory, Oscar Piastri maintained hope during the British Grand Prix, recognizing that a return to slick tyres could provide another opportunity. Ultimately, he had to settle for fourth place.

Reflecting on the race, Piastri shared his thoughts, emphasizing that it was probably best he didn’t voice his frustration over the radio at that moment. Moreover, he acknowledged his disappointment but noted that he remained optimistic, especially after observing that the cars ahead were wearing out their intermediate tyres quickly. Although he encountered the same challenges as his competitors, he remained hopeful about the possibility of switching back to slicks later in the race. The 23-year-old McLaren racer is focused on maximizing their chances, believing that more opportunities would arise to fight for the win.
