The New York Yankees have one last spot to fill the final 26-man roster before the opening day commences in just a few hours from now.
The Bronx Bombers have a set starting lineup for the upcoming opening day. However, they are struggling to fill up the bench. And it looks like the team cannot come to terms with the final 26 names with just a few hours to the season opener against the San Francisco Giants. Moreover, despite strong spring numbers, they sent a few likely names down to the minor league. Hence, the question mark over the final roster spot stays.
Meanwhile, the New York Yankees signed an outfielder in a surprise move earlier today. With talented and experienced players in the bullpen, the decision of the Yankees to seek outside help seems unnatural. Nonetheless, the team looks confident and is ready to welcome the new outfielder/baseman into the bullpen for the opening day.
Yankees Sign Outfielder Franchy Cordero In A Split Contract
In a surprising move, the New York Yankees have signed outfielder Franchy Cordero to a split major league contract. Joel Sherman of the New York Post confirmed the news and said Franchy is well in the line to fill the final spot on the 26-man roster for the opening day. The outfielder played spring with Baltimore Orioles and hit .413 in 47 plate appearances. However, the baseman was released by the Orioles on Monday. Hence, the Yanks considered him a possible candidate for the opening days roster.
However, Francy Cordero is so close yet so far from the roster spot. He has to fight Estevan Florial, who is a highly-ranked candidate for the job. When the Yankees assigned Willie Calhoun to the minor and released Rafael Ortega, the only candidate for the final spot was Estevan. Moreover, for Estevan, the stakes are high as he is without a minor league contract, and a rejection from here would end his 2023 season. Hence, he is fighting tooth and nail to save his career. Overall, all eyes are on the Yankees as they contemplate the right combination.
Skipper Aaron Boone Reveals Team’s Ultimate Goal For The Upcoming Season
We are standing just hours away before the months-long baseball carnival begins. The New York Yankees and rival San Francisco Giants will inaugurate the 2023 MLB season by locking horns in the season opener. Apparently, for the Yankees, the ultimate goal is clear, to win the World Series title. Aaron Boone, Bombers skipper, revealed that the team has a lot of belief in themselves as well as their peers that they can achieve the ultimate goal, unlike last year.
Last season, despite recording 99 wins and winning the Al East, the Yankees were knocked out of ALCS by Houston Astros. Regardless, the year set a new dawn for the $7 billion franchise. The team looks poised to make a difference and stand out at the top and win the much-awaited 28th World Series ring. For the moment, all eyes are on the opening day.
