The New York Yankees infield depth hasn’t been in the best possible form this year, with Anthony Rizzo being injured and Gleyber Torres and DJ LeMahieu struggling with form. Hence, at the upcoming August 1 trade deadline, its imperative for the front office to make a move to bolster infield depth.
That being said, with the playoff race being extremely competitive, the amount of sellers on the market is less. Hence, buying teams like the New York Yankees will face some degree of difficulty in sorting out the best potential roster fits. Meanwhile, the Yanks appear interested in the Red’s second baseman. But his availability is uncertain.
ESPN’s Jorge Castillo Links Yankees To Jonathan India
With the season slipping out of New York Yankees grip, the pressure on the front office to add more pieces at the trade deadline is increasing with each passing day. Meanwhile, since infield has been a matter of concern for the team all season long, Jorge Castillo of ESPN recently reported that the Bronx Bombers have shown some degree of interest in Cincinnati Reds second baseman Jonathan India. Jonathan India, the 2021 NL Rookie of the Year, has been a bright spot for the Reds with his impressive combination of power, speed, and defensive prowess. He is having a resurgence this year with .275/.377/.420 slash line and 8 home runs. Most importantly, India has stolen nine bases off his 10 attempts.
While Jonathan India isn’t considered a strong defensive second baseman, his metrics this season have been better. Hence, he is a complete package for the New York Yankees to replace Gleyber Torres at second base. However, the Cincinnati Reds aren’t very likely to make Jonathan India available if they don’t drop out of the playoff race in the coming week. And even if they do, the Reds are likely to demand a significant return for India, given his talent and potential. Additionally, Integrating a new player mid-season always comes with challenges. Hence, the New York Yankees would need to ensure that India’s addition does not disrupt team chemistry and that he can quickly adapt to the pressures of playing in New York. Overall, Yank’s interest in Jonathan India appears to be a wise and affordable choice, and hence, the front office must make every effort required to materialize the potential deal.
Yanks Drop Out Of Jazz Chisholm Jr’s Pursuit?
Interestingly, the New York Yankees were also linked to Miami Marlins center fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr a few days ago. However, Jorge Castillo mentioned that Yanks had reservations about Jazz’s personality and if he would be able to fit into the Yankee clubhouse and embrace the competitive culture. Hence for now, the Bombers are highly unlikely to make a move.
Besides, the New York Yankees also reportedly enquired about Colorado Rockies All-Star infielder Ryan McMahon. However, the Rockies have informed that Ryan is off the table for now. With that, the Yanks options have further shrunk down and with the trade deadline closing in less than a week, time is running out for the Yankee front office.
