In 2004, the German Ferrari driver, the legend, the greatest of all time, Michael Schumacher, won his seventh Formula One world title. He set the highest record for winning the Formula One championships that day and created history. Before Michael Schumacher, no one ever even imagined securing seven damn titles. But as Michael’s era ended, it left the challenge for the upcoming drivers. And no one in the world but Sir Lewis Hamilton dared to accept it.
In 2020, Lewis Hamilton won his seventh title, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Michael Schumacher. Not only that, he also surpassed Michael in winning the most races. Schumacher had won 91 times, while Hamilton has 103 Formula 1 Grand Prix races. For this reason, both the seven crown holders constantly undergo comparison with each other by Formula One fans.
For Mercedes, both the champions have played a major role. Michael helped the team return in 2010 and made it recognizable among the dominant teams like McLaren and Red Bull. On the other hand, Lewis Hamilton helped Mercedes clinch eight spectacular constructors’ championships, making the team reign for a decade. Toto Wolff, who guided Hamilton to pass Schumacher’s legacy, believes that both the seven-time world champions belong to Mercedes and they are a part of the Silver Arrows family.
Mercedes Boss Toto Wolff Lists His Best Three F1 Drivers
Who is the greatest of all time? The question has numerous answers. Some say it is the five-time world champion Juan Manuel Fangio, and the rest gets confused between Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher. And for the third greatest driver, it becomes even more difficult to answer, but the Mercedes principal Toto Wolff is not at all confused in taking the name of the three top drivers of Formula One. Recently he revealed who he thinks is the third greatest driver in the sport. Speaking with Eurosport Turkey, Toto Wolff said, “The two greatest drivers of Formula One are Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher. And the third is Fernando Alonso.”
The former Alpine driver, Fernando Alonso, will drive for Aston Martin in 2023, replacing Sebastian Vettel. These past years are not going in favor of the 41 years old Spanish driver. But there was a time when Alonso used to dominate the grid. He won two back-to-back championships in 2005 and 2006.
Toto’s considering Alonso as the greatest after Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton is kind of shocking for fans. This is because the Spaniard has only got two titles. By the way, he is indeed deserving of the claim. However, in terms of championships, Sebastian Vettel and Ayrton Senna have more championships than Alonso. They are the heroes of their own time, yet instead of taking Vettel or Senna’s name, Toto Wolff mentioned Fernando Alonso.
Meanwhile, no one should take Fernando for granted; he is 41 and has signed two more years of contract with Aston Martin, but he still got two years to get back what he once had. So, let’s wish the very best to the two-time world champion, Alonso, for his two remaining years in Aston Martin.
