Red Bull Racing’s lead driver, Max Verstappen, is the two-time formula one champion. His team has made a miraculous comeback to dethrone the reigning champions of the sport, Mercedes, by breaking their eight-year-long winning streak. Even in 2023, the team is poised to win the driver’s as well as the constructor’s championship.
As of this writing, Max Verstappen is leading the charts with 69 points. His teammate, Sergio Perez, is just behind him with 54 points, owing to an early retirement in the Australian Grand Prix. By this pace, Max could retain his title even before the conclusion of the current season and register his third championship. However, the Dutchman seems least bothered by the records.
Max Verstappen Does Not Intend To Smash Lewis Hamilton’s Championship Record
Lewis Hamilton, the legend in the making of Formula One, has seven championship titles under his belt. He has equaled Michael Schumacher’s all-time high record. However, a devastating end to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2021 denied Hamilton an opportunity to be an undisputed champion of the F1 sport. Regardless, the Briton continues to strive hard to get that record under his name. But as far as Max Verstappen is concerned, he does not see himself chasing those records in the foreseeable future.
Max Verstappen, in an interview, said that he is not interested in chasing seven or eight championship titles. If the car provided by Red Bull helps him gain that feat, then it’s for the best. Otherwise, he is happy with what he has achieved so far in the sport. It’s worth noting that the Dutchman’s contract with the drink-based team will come to an end in 2028. On top of that, Max had previously mentioned his desire not wanting to last long in the sport. Hence, he might call it quits after the 2028 season, which further limits his chances of scripting the historical record. But for now, Max’s main focus is to win every race he steps into and bring glory to Red Bull, the team that shaped him into the explosive driver he is today.
Verstappen Takes A U-Turn On His Stand On Sprint Races
When FIA announced possible changes to the sprint race format, the Red Bull driver, Max Verstappen, took a strong stand against it. He believes that with an extended calendar, the season is already grueling, and the addition of these said changes would further take a toll on the driver. Further, the Dutchman dropped a bombshell when he claimed that if FIA continues to bring in more changes, he does not see himself being in the paddock for too long.
However, after a massive uproar on social media, Max Verstappen has issues clarification. He said that at some point in his life, he would reassess his life choices and make a decision on his career in Formula One. However, the decision to hang up the boots would purely be based on multiple factors and not just sprint races alone. Max added that he would definitely race for Red Bull till the end of his contract in 2028 and will take a final call afterward.
