The iconic football rivalry between Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo has been one for the ages. These legendary players keep making and breaking records for fun. Meanwhile, the Argentine star has recently secured an edge over Ronaldo as Messi has broken his Champions League record.
Leo Messi Breaks Ronaldo\’s Record!
Compared to Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo may have scored more Champions League goals overall. However, Messi and his competitor were tied on Wednesday for the most teams the competition has ever seen scored against. Two more Champions League records have been added to Messi\’s resume. Evidently, he had a strong start to the 2022–23 season. The Argentine superstar now has Maccabi Haifa on his list of clubs he has destroyed in the most competitive league in Europe. A goal of his was scored against the Israeli club, making them the 39th team to do it.
In the recent match of Paris Saint-Germain against Maccabi Haifa, the mercurial Argentine once again rewrote the annals of soccer. A defender\’s deflection of a cross by Kylian Mbappé into the box occurred in the 37th minute of PSG\’s second group-stage encounter of the season. Messi seized the opportunity when it presented itself, tying the score at 1-1 following Maccabi Haifa\’s startling 24th-minute goal. While this was happening, Manchester United\’s great Portuguese player Ronaldo, who has been excluded from this season\’s top continental tournament, made the goal against 38.
It was Messi\’s 126th goal in the tournament, putting him 14 goals behind Ronaldo for the all-time record. Due to Manchester United\’s absence from the Champions League this year, the former Barcelona player has a chance to catch up to Ronaldo. Messi broke the scoreless draw in Champions League action last week. The seven-time Ballon d\’Or winner also made history by becoming the first player to score in 18 Champions League campaigns. As Messi\’s closest rival in that area, French forward Karim Benzema, he will begin his European account for 2022–2023 with similar efforts.
Having done so every season since 2005/06, he has also become the first player to score a Champions League goal in 18 different campaigns. Karim Benzema held the previous record by drawing first on 17. With the goal, Messi closed the gap on Ronaldo\’s record-breaking 140 points in Europe\’s top league to only 14. Of course, the Manchester United player cannot improve his record this year. At the same time, Ronaldo and ManU didn\’t qualify for Champions League this summer.
