The New York Yankees’ pursuit of Juan Soto ended in disappointment as the Dominican outfielder ultimately signed a record-breaking $765 million contract with the New York Mets. Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner recently spoke candidly about the team’s failed bid to secure Soto’s services, expressing his disappointment in a recent interview with YES Network’s Meredith Marakovits.
Steinbrenner revealed that the Yankees were in advanced stages of signing Soto but were ultimately outbid by the Mets. He said, “I wouldn’t say I was surprised, but I really didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t know what was going to happen.” Steinbrenner also acknowledged the influence of Soto’s large family in the decision-making process, noting that there were “a lot of different voices in his ear, talking to him and giving him advice”.
Despite the setback, the Yankees are looking to bolster their roster with other key acquisitions. Steinbrenner believes that the additions of Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt will help fill the offensive void left by Soto. The Yankees traded for Bellinger and signed Goldschmidt for $1.25 million, hoping to strengthen their lineup. Steinbrenner commented, “I think Bellinger and Goldschmidt are going to make up for a good deal of Juan’s offensive production.”
In addition to these moves, the Yankees also acquired Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers for $8.6 million. Steinbrenner is optimistic about the impact Williams will have on the team’s bullpen. He said, “The back end of that bullpen is phenomenal, with Hamilton, Weaver, and Devin. I’m excited about Lowe and Isaac being back as well, and I think by hopefully the beginning of June, he’ll be a big part of that bullpen. It’s a good one.”
Juan Soto’s decision to sign with the Mets was influenced by several factors, including the Mets’ offer of a 15-year, $765 million contract, which included a $75 million signing bonus. The Yankees had offered a 16-year, $760 million deal with a $60 million signing bonus, but Soto ultimately chose the Mets.
As the Yankees prepare for the upcoming season, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how these new acquisitions perform. While the loss of Juan Soto was undoubtedly a blow, the team’s management is confident that their strategic moves will keep the Yankees competitive in the league.
