The New York Yankees lost 8-5 to the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday to trail 0-1 in the three-game home series. The game was already lost after Marcus Stroman allowed 7 runs in a horrific start that lasted just 2.2 innings. However, the home team had an opportunity to level the scores in the second innings.
Gleyber Torres, the veteran second baseman who’s already under fire for an underwhelming season, committed a rookie blunder on base paths, which got him benched for the rest of the game on disciplinary actions. And amid a wave of criticism, the infielder wholeheartedly apologised to the team and fans.
Gleyber Torres Takes Accountability Of Base Running Gaffe Vs Blue Jays
Gleyber Torres found himself at the receiving end after committing an inexcusable rookie error while running on basepaths in New York Yankees 8-5 loss to Blue Jays on Friday. It all started when Torres mistook a line drive for a home run. It was only until the ball rebounded after hitting the left field wall that Torres realised he had to run on bases. However, time had run out, and the infielder had to restrict for a single in what could have been a comfortable double. That mistake cost him later in the inning as he was caught at home trying to score from first base on Anthony Volpe‘s double. While Gleyber Torres stayed in the defence for the third inning, he was benched after having a word with the Yankees skipper in the fourth inning.
The infielder fumed at Aaron Boone and pleaded his case with visible frustration. However, the Yankees manager shoved him away by staying adamant on his decision to take him out. Oswaldo Cabrera ended up playing second base for the rest of the game. Needless to say, the dugout showdown with Boone didn’t reflect well on Gleyber Torres‘ image, and he ended up apologising in the post-game interview. Torres took accountability for his error, saying as a professional, he cannot make any excuses. He just let down the team and the fans and vowed to become better. “I’m going to learn a lot. I have to be more mature in that situation and just play hard,” Torres added. Notably, the second baseman also deemed Boone’s decision to bench him the right call given the circumstances, despite being caught having a showdown in the dugout on air.
Yankees Captain Backs Torres Amid A Hurricane Of Criticism
Meanwhile, despite the unacceptable gaffe, Aaron Judge backed his Yankee teammate Gleyber Torres to come out better and stronger. Judge highlighted the infielder’s character as he showed up on the dugout fence to cheer for his team despite getting abruptly benched over disciplinary actions.
Aaron Judge bet on Gleyber Torres to correct his mistakes and never repeat the same gaffe ever in his major league career. “If I know Gleyber, something like this ain’t going to happen again. He takes pride in his work and his craft,” Judge said. Since the Yankees have made peace with the situation, Torres will continue to start at second base this weekend.
