Anthony Volpe, the New York Yankees rookie shortstop, entered the big leagues with a lot of hype. He drew a comparison from the club’s former legendary shortstop, Derek Jeter. Jeter, who served the franchise for two decades, called it quits in 2014. Since then, a lot of infielders have come by, but no one could really emulate what Derek did for the team.

But Anthony Volpe proved to be different. He was an instant hit during the spring training, which fast-tracked his major league debut. However, the baggage of expectations was something that stuck with him throughout the season. While he had a mediocre season on the plate, Volpe’s defensive prowess has kept his boat afloat. Meanwhile, the kid got to meet his idol for the first time, who had a piece of advice to offer.

Anthony Volpe began his big league journey with a lot of expectations. He was often compared with New York Yankees renowned shortstop Derek Jeter, who had an exceptional 20-year-long career in the Bronx. The kid knew the stakes were high and worked hard to live up to the hype. To be fair, Volpe did manage to produce multiple awe-inspiring moments throughout the 142 games this season. While the consistency has been a problem, the shortstop’s overall performance has been nothing short of impressive. Derek Jeter, for a fact, agrees. He met the rookie during Old Timers Day celebrations and shared his valuable insights.

Jeter started off by applauding Anthony Volpe’s maturity during the phases of ups and downs. He says that being a young guy playing for New York is always a tough place to be in. But the way Volpe has handled himself is a trait that stood out for the former shortstop. Derek further shared some words of wisdom and urged the rookie to have fun and stay true to himself. “Don’t try to do something that you’re not accustomed to. You have to enjoy yourself,” added Jeter. The Hall of Famer opines that for a young player like Volpe, the main focus should be on winning. The rest will take of itself as long as the intent remains in the true place. Meanwhile, Anthony Volpe had a wide smile as he posed with Jeter for a heartwarming picture.

The New York Yankees’ plans of extending the series winning streak were foiled by the Milwaukee Brewers. The NL Central leaders secured the first two games of the series by unleashing offensive prowess. However, the Bronx Bombers avoided humiliation by winning the finale in a thrilling finish. The Yanks remained hitless for ten innings as the game went into extra innings.

In the bottom 13th inning, the game remained tied at 3-3, with Kyle Higashioka on the plate. With the second base covered, the catcher slammed a walk-off hit to the left, which went wide to the left fielder. As the outfielder got hold of the ball, Gleyber Torres reached home to secure the game-tying run. The pumped Yankee dugout stormed into the field to celebrate the win and ended up ripping Kyle’s shirt.
