On Wednesday, the New York Mets routed their city rivals, the Yankees, 12-3. While doing so, they swept another Subway Series this year. So far, in the 2024 regular season, Pete Alonso’s team has not lost a game against Aaron Judge’s team. But the Bronx Bombers had the best start to the ongoing season. They were cruising along their way to confirm their place for the postseason. But then, in mid-June, the Pinstripes started going through a slump. Since June 13, they went 6-16. Then, since the start of July, they were 4-8 until the Midsummer Classic. After the All-Star break, the Yankees have been 2-4. Clearly, the 27-time World Champions are not over their slump yet.

Moreover, it is quite clear that Brian Cashman needs to make smart roster moves before the July 30 MLB Trade Deadline. They need to find top pitchers available in the market. But also, some help for their offense won’t be a bad idea. Lately, it has been pretty evident that the team is over-relying on the Judge-Soto duo. Prior to the two-game Subway Series, ex-Yankees pitcher Luis Severino said that his former team has only “Two good hitters.” It was clear that everybody knew the Yankees needed to bolster their roster at the deadline. But Severino believes his current team needs upgrades as well.

The MLB Trade Deadline is on next Tuesday. On multiple occasions, the Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo has said that it is essential for the team to make additions ahead of the deadline. Lately, in an interview with New York Post’s Joel Sherman, the starting pitcher Luis Severino seemed to agree with his teammate. He told Sherman “One hundred percent” that they need to make roster moves before the deadline ends on Tuesday. Moreover, the ex-Yankees hurler said that nobody expected the Mets to be where they are right now. Severino believes that they have shown everybody what they can do. But most importantly, the starter added, “We can get better.”

It seems both the outfielder and the starting pitcher want Steve Cohen, the owner and David Stearns, the Mets president of baseball operations to make smart roster moves ahead of Tuesday’s deadline. Back on May 30, Severino and their All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso were out of contract. Then, the Mets were 22-33, and they were discussing about trading Alonso and Severino. But now, almost at the end of July, the Mets are 53-48, and they have climbed up to the Wild Card spot in their National League standings.

MLB Insider Believes The NY Side Should “Improve The Product”

Joel Sherman mentioned that teams that position themselves well for the postseason have a lot of expectations from their front office. The players would want the front office to keep improving the product. Most importantly, Sherman believes the Mets manager Carlos Mendoza and his boys have done exactly that. They were down 11 games under .500 on June 2.

Since then, they have produced the best record, 29-13. Moreover, they have been 4-0 against the Yankees. Brian Cashman’s side has more desperation to be “The big buyers at the MLB Trade Deadline.” Clearly, the Mets are on a roll, and smart roster moves ahead of the deadline would make them even tougher to beat.
