The New York Yankees’ outfield depth ceased to exist mid-season in 2023 when both Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton served time on the injury list. Jasson Dominguez, who debuted in early September, is currently rehabbing a Tommy John surgery. Moreover, the likes of Jake Bauers and Billy McKinney are unlikely to see another day of light in the Bronx.

Thus, the New York Yankees will feel the void and need for a strong outfielder who not only anchors the lineup but also provides some support to captain Aaron Judge in the outfield. A lot of players have been linked to the Bombers so far. But this time, a possible reinforcement comes from arch-East rivals, the Boston Red Sox.

It’s not a secret that the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are unideal trade partners. After the Bambino curse, the Boston-based team would rather lose than engage in a trade with AL-East rivals. However, as years passed by, the dynamics and circumstances also evolved. Presently, both teams are desperate to bounce back and reclaim the AL-East dominance. Amid this, outfielder Alex Verdugo of the Red Sox has been actively linked to the Yanks in an unusual trade deal. Verdugo, a 27-year-old outfielder, has been a valuable part of the Red Sox’s roster since being acquired in the blockbuster trade that sent Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is known for his solid all-around skills, including a good glove in the outfield and a bat that has shown promise.

He finished yet another strong season in 2023 with a .264 batting average, 13 homers and 54 RBIs. The New York Yankees, on the other hand, have long been in search of a left-handed outfield bat to provide balance to their lineup. Their roster remains currently right-handed heavy. Thus, adding a player like Verdugo, who bats left-handed, would be a significant boost to their offense. With his ability to hit for average and occasional power, Verdugo could be a key piece in the Yanks’ quest for a championship. Additionally, Verdugo is signed through 2024 and thus would come cheap. Having said that, the Bronx Bombers must lower their guard to seek assistance from East rivals. After all, the 2023 season has put them in an unprecedented situation.

So far, one big name that made waves in the Bronx is Juan Soto. It’s rumored that the San Diego Padres want to lower their payroll. And thus would give up an arbitration-eligible Soto. Immediately, the New York Yankees emerged as strong suitors. To further fuel the speculation, Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic claimed that Soto wants to move to the East Coast in 2024.

Apparently, the California native is extremely close to his family. When he got traded to the Padres, his mom couldn’t visit him as much. That made Soto extremely homesick and uncomfortable. Thus, if given a chance, Soto would love to join the New York Yankees. He also loves the atmosphere in the Bronx. And the pleasure of extended family time will play a huge role in the outfielder’s professional decisions.
