Clay Holmes disappointed the New York Yankees in Game 2 against the Texas Rangers. The NY side could have won that game if the closers did a better job. But after that loss, the Bronx Bombers have dropped to second position in the American League East division behind the Baltimore Orioles. The O’s have won a game more than the NY side. A little more than 25 games are remaining before the playoffs begin but the last few series losses are raising concerns for Aaron Boone’s side. More specifically, it is the pitching unit that is raising the most concerns. Fans are not happy with their starting pitchers, like Nestor Cortes, lately.

Then, the ace pitcher Gerrit Cole does not completely look healthy. He was on the 60-day Injured List since the start of the regular season. Cole suffered an elbow inflammation during the spring training. Then, Luis Gil and Clarke Schmidt have been on the Injured List. However, Gil and Schmidt will possibly return soon. But the closers are not raising that much hope either. Lately, Clay Holmes blew a game against the Rangers and the Yankees lost again.

What Are The Yankees Going To Do With Clay Holmes?

In the last game against the Texas Rangers, Clay Holmes lost his control and feel for the sinker. As a result, he might have also lost his job as a Yankee closer. Moreover, the two-time All-Star closer allowed two walks and a single until Wyatt Langford, the Texas Rangers rookie, hit a game-defining Grand Slam. As a result, the Rangers won 7-4 on Tuesday night. For the first time in the last three weeks, the 27-time champions have dropped to second spot in the AL East. In his last 40 chances, Holmes has blown 11 saves, an MLB-high. Now, will the Yankees manager consider replacing the closer with others in the bullpen?

After the game on Tuesday, Aaron Boone said he would not want to say if the team is planning to change the closers when they are feeling raw and emotional. He added that the best thing to do right now is to talk with the team and decide what the best plan for the future is. In the post-game interview, Clay Holmes mentioned that there have been times when he felt like he threw well but got beaten anyway. However, on Tuesday, he did not feel good and was not throwing well either. Lastly, Holmes said that he should not have come out on top there with the way he was pitching.

Aaron Boone Said The Closer Had A Pretty Bad Day On Tuesday

On August 18, Clay Holmes had another blown save. During that game, Aaron Boone had said, “Clay’s pitching well but he is the guy.” Clearly, the closer is finding it hard to put hitters away with a couple of strikes. After Tuesday’s game, the skipper said that the Rangers really got him “Today.”

He mentioned that losing out with a soft contact there was not the thing that cost them the game on Tuesday. Boone pointed at Langford putting a real charge into one. But the manager believes Holmes is tough and he will handle it as well as he can. However, Boone also added that lately there has been some real tough ones for him.
