EXPLORED: Will New York Yankees Reunite With Former Starting Pitcher Frankie Montas?

The New York Yankees are on the right track in the current free agency. They needed to make the necessary changes if the purpose was redemption. Moreover, it is not new information that the Bronx Bombers struggled in the last few seasons. They barely managed to maintain a streak of winning seasons. In 2023, the NY side finished with an 82-80 record. But they could not make the postseason this year. It has been a tremendous shame for the 27-time champions.

Recently, the Yankees were able to land Juan Soto with a trade package that includes Trent Grisham. It was a major boost to the Yankees in this off-season. Moreover, this deal marks the first major trade of the current season. For a long time, the Yankees were eager to sign a deal with the San Diego Padres for Juan Soto. Now, they got what they wanted for so long: a superstar lefty hitter. Another trade option the NY side is looking for is bringing back the right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas.

The Yankees want another reliable starting pitcher alongside Gerrit Cole. Now, Montas can be a good addition to their starting rotation, aside from the AL Cy Young Winner. As per Scott Boras, the Yankees have approached him to get the star hurler back in their rotation. After what the agent of Frankie Montas revealed, it is better to look at how things were when he was with the Bronx Bombers. Things did not go as they hoped, and they traded Frankie to the Oakland Athletics in 2022 at the trade deadline. But then Frankie sustained a shoulder injury that meant a premature end to the season for him.

Later, the doctors said he would need shoulder surgery. As a result, he was able to play merely one game this year. Currently, Frankie Montas is a free agent. He had a fair share of injuries over the last couple of years. Anyway, across the six seasons he played for the A’s, he posted a solid 3.70 ERA. Hence, he’s a good option for starting pitchers despite his unreliable health. But if he stays healthy, he can prove to be vital in the rotation alongside questionable Gerrit Cole.

The NY side did not make it to the World Series since they last won it in 2009. It has been a long wait for the Yankees Nation. But things did not seem to be going in the right direction as the team struggled to make the postseason. Hence, the front office decided to bring significant changes this offseason. Initially, Brian Cashman revealed last month what they have been looking for in the free agency market.

They were desperate to improve their offense. Moreover, they had the second-worst batting average last season, only better than the Oakland Athletics. Hence, they were looking for a couple of superstar lefty hitters and a star pitcher, too. The Yankees are still on the hunt for the Japanese sensation Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Moreover, the Bronx Bombers may have a good bullpen. But they are looking to reinforce their pitching department.
