The New York Yankees will be allowed to expand its major league active roster from 26 to 28 members starting from September 1 until the conclusion on 2024 MLB season. MLB relaxes this rule every year and this season, the timing is perfect for Bronx to bolster the roster.

Due to injury concerns and inconsistency, the New York Yankees roster has lacked the necessary stability. That being said, the pool of options to choose from is wide and hence the club management will be required to make timely decisions based on immediate roster needs. Lets explore some expected moves Bombers can enforce on Sunday.

Top farm system prospect Jasson Dominguez has been due a major league promotion for a while now. Injuries restricted him in the minors all season long. On top of that, Alex Verdugo has been a bust at left field. Hence, it’s potentially time for Jasson to take over left-field reigns until the end of the season. The kid is hitting .358 with a 19-for-53 record since August 14. When Jasson made his debut in September last year, he scripted franchise history with multiple home runs in just 7 games. Hence, the fans would certainly expect something similar this time around.

Yankees To Activate Anthony Rizzo From IL

New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo has missed two months of action due to an arm fracture injury. He recently homered in his latest rehab game with Double-A Somerset Patriots and also played infield earlier than the preset schedule. While Rizzo’s pre-injury numbers were underwhelming, he is certainly a better option compared to slumping third baseman DJ LeMahieu. Rizzo has enough postseason experience, which is the need of the hour for the Yankees. However, despite the roster expansion, Rizzo’s activation could result in the demotion of prospect Ben Rice.

Jon Berti Might Eat DJ LeMahieu’s Playing Time

Third baseman Jon Berti has been on IL with a left calf strain since May. His rehab was further delayed by a setback. However, Berti has been making positive progress in his minor league rehab assignment since August 24 and could be up for promotion in the first week of September. Notably, Yankees manager Aaron Boone has always been a fan of Berti’s defensive skills at third base, and hence, he could likely replace DJ LeMahieu on the roster as an infield backup.

Relief pitcher Lou Trivino hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2022 due to Tommy John surgery. However, his recent few outings at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre have been outstanding, resulting in steady improvement. His experience could come in handy to the Yankee bullpen, especially against lefty hitters. Additionally, Ian Hamilton, sidelined since June due to a lat strain, commenced a rehab assignment last weekend. He possesses unique stuff that could help the Yankees bullpen have an edge over the opposition. Additionally, Nick Burdi and Cody Poteet are also recovering well and could be ready for majors soon.
