Yankees, Gerrit Cole
Robert Sabo for New York Post

The New York Yankees will be potential buyers at the upcoming mid-season trade deadline as their postseason aspirations are on the lineup. Infield and bullpen depth will be some major areas of concern going forward. Hence, rumors have already begun to heat up days leading up to the deadline.

Notably, the New York Yankees are linked to every big infield or pitching name available on the trade window. However, not all glitter is gold, and hence, not every link-up is an ideal match for the team. Hence, let’s explore three such trade rumors and determine if it’s the right choice or a bad fit for the Yanks.

Good Fits For Yankees

1. Jonathan India

Cincinnati Reds second baseman Jonathan India has established himself as a reliable infielder with both offensive and defensive prowess. He is having a rebound season with a .275 batting average and 8 home runs in 94 games. India is a perfect candidate for the leadoff spot, something the New York Yankees have been struggling with since the beginning of the season.

However, while Jonathan India is a right fit for the Yankees, his availability is subject to the Reds’ position in the playoff race. Moreover, given the Yanks and Seattle Mariners’ significant interest, the Reds are mulling to increase the infielder’s trade value at the deadline. Regardless, India’s youth and potential for growth make him an attractive long-term investment for the Yanks to make a move, irrespective of the risks.

2. Jack Flaherty

With the New York Yankees’ rotation plagued by injuries and inconsistencies, Jack Flaherty presents a prime opportunity to solidify their starting pitching. Flaherty, when healthy, has shown flashes of ace potential. His ability to strike out batters and pitch deep into games could provide much-needed stability to the Yanks’ rotation. This season, Jack is having a resurgence with a 2.95 ERA in 18 starts for the Tigers.

Additionally, adding Jack Flaherty would alleviate some of the pressure on ace Gerrit Cole and give the New York Yankees a formidable one-two punch. Of course, the Tigers will keep a high price tag for Flaherty, given his upside. However, the Yankee front office can pull off the ambitious move by parting ways with top prospects such as Spencer Jones or Everson Pereira or even a major league player who would serve the cause.

Bad Fit For Yankees

1. Jazz Chisholm

Miami Marlins CF Jazz Chisholm, while a talented player, is a poor trade fit for the New York Yankees. Chisholm’s injury history is undoubtedly a red flag coupled with inconsistency and a high strikeout rate. However, the main reason behind Yanks’ reservations about trading Chisholm is his aggressive personality and unruly behavior with teammates and opposition alike.

The New York Yankees front office does not believe Jazz Chisholm will fit into the Yankee clubhouse. Notably, the club already made mistakes by fostering problematic players such as  Aroldis Chapman and Domingo German despite their uncivilized actions. Hence, they cannot repeat the same with Jazz, as many players have previously flagged him as an unideal teammate.
