Draymond Green had a disappointing 2023-2024 season, and so did the Golden State Warriors. The whole team seemed like they were missing something throughout the season. They were not like the old Dubs that used to dominate the league between 2015 and 2022. This same core group of players – Dray, Stephen Curry, and his Splash Brother Klay Thompson won four titles in a span of eight years together. That same core was there in 2024 as well. But then, what went wrong with the modern-day dynasty?

They could not even make the first round of the playoffs. Moreover, the Sacramento Kings knocked them out in the play-in tournament. Some fans believe the Dubs are missing Kevin Durant. Then, there are those fans who argue that the Warriors won two more championships without KD. Now, the question remains: what is it that the GSW must do to get ready for the next season? Lately, Draymond Green said that they need a new “Identity.”

The veteran forward messed up the 2023-2024 season from the very beginning with his back-to-back suspensions. In the absence of Dray Green, the Dubs had a weak defense. Moreover, they had to face a losing streak in Green’s absence that messed up the Warrior’s start to the season. But then, Klay Thompson had a disappointing season as well. He struggled with his shooting, and in terms of average, Klay had one of his worst seasons ever. Then, it became too hard for Stephen Curry to carry the team to the playoffs alone. Even Curry struggled with consistency. All in all, the Dubs had one of the most forgettable seasons ever. Now, how would they like to move on from here? Recently, Draymond Green shared his idea about what the team can do to get back to the playoffs.

On his podcast, The Draymond Green Show, the veteran forward told Danny Green, a veteran NBA wing, that they need to define what they are going to be. He mentioned that the core is changing, they are getting older. It is not the same as in 2019 or even 2022, when they last won the NBA title. The great news is that they are adjusting to the change, feels the former Defensive Player of the Year. Moreover, Green credits head coach Steve Kerr for doing an incredible job with their breakout star of the 2023-2024 season. Dray added that Kerr is allowing Jonathan Kuminga to have the ball more and be in the pick-and-roll. Anyway, Green feels it will take some time to adjust to the changes when they have had so much success with what they have been doing for so many years.

New Identity Is Of Utmost Importance For The Dubs

Klay Thompson is uncertain for the next season. The Warriors might trade him to the Orlando Magic or the Philadelphia 76ers. Anyway, the Dubs will still discuss with the veteran shooting guard regarding a contract extension. But with the same core, the Golden State Warriors went through a lot of inconsistent performances in the 2023-2024 season.

Perhaps those days are over when they could rely on the superstar trio of Green, Curry, and Thompson. Now, if they want to win the NBA title, they will have to look up to the young core with Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski, and so on. That’s why the Warriors must be in search of a “New Identity.”
