Sergio Pererz, Daniel Ricciardo, And Christian Horner

The current driver lineup is more uncertain than the Formula One sport itself. One might predict the outcome of a race, but it is almost impossible to predict who will drive for which team. Since Hamilton’s Ferrari move, the entire paddock has been reshuffled. However, Red Bull wanted to bring calm amid the internal chaos. Thus, it retained Sergio Perez, extending his contract for two years.

However, the decision soon backfired as the Mexican driver hit a blockade. The experienced driver has failed to score points. On top of that, he has been involved in two crashes, giving a big monetary blow to his team. Therefore, the ‘external voices’ claim that Checo will soon be replaced. While RBR has ample options, Daniel Ricciardo might have an edge over the others.

Sergio Perez is a versatile driver known for his precision. Since his debut in 2011, the Mexican racer has failed to leave a mark. Although he has performed well in the past few seasons, consistency has always been an issue. Similarly, he started the 2024 campaign with solid results, finishing almost every race on the podium. Fast forward to July 2024, Checo seems like a different individual, fighting for every single point. On the other hand, Daniel Ricciardo, who has experience driving alongside Max Verstappen, had a decent season in a much inferior car. Although he is trailing by nine pints behind his rookie teammate Yuki Tsunoda, Ricciardo’s racing abilities are well-known.

Thus, if Checo’s slump continues to hinder Red Bull’s Constructors’ Cup dream, they might look for a replacement. Therefore, the experienced Australian driver could be the perfect choice to replace Pererz in a flimsy season. In a recent media interaction, Ricciardo acknowledged the intense nature of Formula One, hinting at his RBR promotion. The Australian driver highlighted the ever-present pressure on Formula 1 drivers, regardless of their performance. He explained that all drivers, even those performing exceptionally well, face constant pressure to maintain their high standards. Ricciardo acknowledged his time in the spotlight this year and the scrutiny on Sergio Perez.

Ricciardo emphasized that one good race is not enough to alleviate this pressure permanently. Despite a strong performance in Montreal, he noted that another good result is necessary to keep the momentum going. He acknowledged that Max Verstappen has significantly outscored Perez, which has led to higher expectations for the latter. Further, he pointed out that being in the spotlight is part of the sport, and drivers must learn to manage it. The constant media questions and scrutiny can feel overwhelming. Still, experienced drivers like Ricciardo and Perez have learned to focus on their engineering and car setup, tuning out the noise and rolling with the challenges.

While there is no official statement by any RBR personnel, a report from Motorsport.com suggests Horner’s inclination toward Ricciardo. Thus, if the reports come out correct, Ricciardo could be signed in as Checo’s replacement for driver alongside his best friend, Max Verstappen.

Although, it might be risky to fire a driver in the middle of a season. However, Checo’s performance is mounting pressure on his team. Thus, it won’t be surprising if the team decides to terminate his contract prematurely.
