When questioned about whether Mercedes could have won the race with superior tire selections, Christian Horner said that the team\’s plan would not have been successful. He stated that the medium and hard tires just do not have enough traction on that surface. They were taken aback by how cautious Mercedes was being with this tactic. Red Bull would continue to be in the lead, according to Horner. They would have come much closer to winning, though. Max Verstappen easily defeated the Mercedes, which used a Medium-to-Hard tire plan, with Red Bull\’s Soft-to-Medium tire strategy.

Mercedes was vying for their first Formula One victory of the 2022 campaign as the season came to a close. After a challenging start to the year, Mercedes improved their competitiveness. When asked if Mercedes might have won the race in Mexico with a strategy identical to Red Bull\’s, Christian Horner said he thought the team may have lost up to two victories because they chose the Hard tire. According to race engineer Peter Bonnington, Red Bull\’s medium compound tires were still not expected to last to the finish line.

Now, as the teams are heading to Brazil for the penultimate Grand Prix, it might be the final opportunity for Mercedes to score their first win of the season. Thus, it will be interesting to see what approach Mercedes employ.
